Slipping Phumelela bets on technology
15 years 8 months ago
By Slindile Khanyile and Audrey D'Angelo
Phumelela will introduce new betting games and enhance its technology-based offering to mitigate the economic downturn, which has seen earnings tumble significantly at the JSE-listed betting and horseracing group.
Rian du Plessis, the chief executive at Phumelela, said yesterday that one of the new games would be the All Up bet, which was popular in Mauritius. This game allows the customer to take a win or place a bet on selected horses across the various races in any single race meeting.Business report Article

Rian du Plessis,
I call upon your common sense, not your education, your common sense.
In good times we do organic growth, ie add more products.
In bad times we add more customers, ie recruit customers with training programs.
Like the brokers do for JSE, SAFEX, commodities.
Just like the P3(new product) did not add value, the "All Up bet" (new product) will not add value NOW to the turnover.
When the economy turns (2016), you can add new products.
regards
Andre van der Westhuizen

I understand that Phumelela cannot directly market the training programs to the South African Public.Outsource the venture.
Phumelela cannot be seen as directly been involved in the moral decay of the South African society. The church and church related groups will slaugter Phumelela in the media.
However, if we remove the stigma from horse racing, and market the industry from a diffrent angle, we could have even these groups, comming out in support of the venture.
When we ourselves, invest in shares on the JSE, SAFEX or commodities such as gold or oil, we dont know for sure that we will have a positive return on investment.
In other words, I dont know whether my shares that I have bought are going to win me some money, or loose me some money.
Reality check, for me to win some money with my share purchases, someone else will have to loose some money with his share purchases.
Hence, we hand our monthly pension money, annuity policies and even lumpsums over to the brokers to invest on our behalf.
We have come to realise that these brokers know just as little as we do, purely because the industry they invest in, has become to large, to complex, and have too many variables.
Phumelela has created an alternative stock exchange.
A stock exchange where the individual can invest in.
A stock exchange where the variables are at hand, not as many as the variables that determine the price movement on the RAND or the price of GOLD.
The tools are available via the Phumelela tote website, and the customers can start trading.
What is missing?
Venues in every town, almost like conference centres.
Venues that will hold minimum 40 customers, with PC's with internet access for at least 40 customers.
Overhead projector facilities.
An ex jockey, Bookmaker, Bookmakers clerks to be used as trainer/teacher.
Marketing on national TV.
5 day course.
10 am till 6pm
R2000 per customer.
R1000 per customer goes to new TOTE account for the customer.
R40,000 remaining to pay venue + trainer for 5 days + tea/coffee.
Training course
1.Divisions
2.MR
3.Collateral form
4.Speed Rating
5.Computer form
6.Tracks
7.Draws
8.How to read tote boards
9.How to structure bets
Open online booking, start date subject to 40 students per town via Phumelela website.
Most training schools do that.
Full payments up front.
Refund if no training course scheduled for a town within 2 months.
Instead of going to the casino, the people will give this a try.
A place to go to, 5 days a week.
2nd and extra week cost at R1000 per week for venue+trainer+coffee/tea

andre, these proposals were put before the powers that be (even pre-phumelela) up to nearly 20 years ago with game plans similar to Japanese success story, and time and time again over the years, to no avail...it just falls on deaf ears constantly...those who do not listen, must feel surely.
Your idea is common sense, and yes, it has been spoken before quite a few times, but you cannot make the horse drink that does not want to! The only way it will surely change is after it has fallen apart completely, then whoever is still around, can start from scratch.
