SON OF GALILEO TOPS OPENING DAY OF TATTERSALLS OCTOBER 1

It was appropriate that in the week following the momentous victory of SEA THE STARS in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe that his brother, the Champion stallion GALILEO would be represented by the session topping lot on the opening day of Europe’s premier yearling sale, the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1. The opening day saw strong trade with 151 lots sold for 16,840,000 guineas, at an average of 111,523 guineas and a median of 80,000 guineas, figures that compared favourably with last year’s opening session.
2009 OCTOBER YEARLING SALE Book 1 DAY 1 FIGURES

Denis Brosnan’s Croom House Stud consigned lot 118, the bay colt by GALILEO out of the DARSHAAN mare TADKIYRA whose progeny include the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes winner DAMSON and the Group winning filly GEMINIANI. Interest in the well related colt came initially from bloodstock agents Richard Brown and Charlie Gordon-Watson, as well as from Crispin de Moubray, but the trio were soon overtaken by Sir Robert Ogden, standing alongside John Warren and John Magnier, with the latter triumphant at 550,000 guineas. It was a successful day for the Limerick nursery, having also consigned the 220,000 guineas DANSILI colt out of TYRANNY who was also purchased by the Coolmore supremo.

George Washington filly set to go to Hannon

AGENT Ross Doyle came out best at 320,000gns for the only living offspring by George Washington, which was offered at Wednesday's Tattersalls October Yearling Sale by Gerry Burke's Glidawn Stud, and the filly is set to go to trainer Richard Hannon.

Doyle was acting on behalf of owner Julie Wood, whohas Goffs Million winner Lucky General, as well as the talented trio Pure Poetry, Fremont and The Miniver Rose, all of whom are trained by Hannon.

Wood said: "When you get horses like Sea The Stars and George Washington, they become a bit of a fairytale and especially in his case after his sad demise, which makes this a very special filly.

"She's a very nice filly and I wanted to give her a good go. Buying something like her is always in the back of your mind as you go around the sale and although that's obviously a lot of money, I thought she might have made even more - we were shouting for the auctioneer to bring his hammer down! She's a one off, there's no other one like her and I wanted to be with her all of the way.

"We'll have a good look at her pedigree and try to come up with a special name for her and, although we decided after Gilded won the Queen Mary Stakes that we'd just race horses and wouldn't breed, at the same time maybe we will now review that again."

Richard Hannon jnr added:"We don't normally look at these type of horses very often, or in fact ever. It's nice for someone who started off with a horse for 2,000gns whose had massive success with not massively expensive horses. We've stepped it up with this filly and she is totally unique. I didn't think we would get her - she represents an awful lot of value."

Bookmakers William Hill reacted by offering 20-1 for the filly, who is out of Flawlessly, to match her famous sire in achieving a Group 1 victory before the end of her four-year-old season in 2012.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for Hills, said: ‘’I don’t think I’m alone in hoping that the only offspring of the brilliant George Washington turns out to be as talented as her sire.

"There is some fair form amongst her siblings, and it is not inconceivable that we see her refusing to enter the winner’s enclosure after triumphing in the 2011 Guineas.’’
