Money is star of the stage for Friday the (draw) 13th

All set for a full go at Greyville tonight and the punting action starts
early on with best earning options identified in the maiden races 1 and
3. This is the chance to load up in preparation for the much awaited
launch of night racing at Turffontein tomorrow and the Charity Mile 12
race program. There's 2 graded and 2 listed features on offer as well as
the (non-black type) Peermont Emperor's Palace Ready-to-Run Cup worth
R1.5million in stakes money. This race is geared exclusively for the 2
year olds purchased at Summerhill Stud's ready to run sale from the
previous year and serves as an outstanding incentive to buyers.

Getting back to Greyville.. and Bennet Bulana threatens a stronghold on
the early races sending out his two "stars" - Stage Star in the first
and Monetary Star in the third. Both have strong claims in their
respective races and bets can confidently be struck around these two as
sure-fires to contest the outcomes.

Up until the 31st July this year, Benneth Bulana had been assisted
financially with his training career by the Gold Circle Transformation
Fund; setup to develop opportunities within the horse racing industry
for those classified as previously disadvantaged. A few years on now and
the stable stands as a fully fledged and self sufficient training
operation. The subsidy has been withdrawn (end 2008/2009 season) and
it's all-clear for sweet tribute tonight with the Stage and Monetary
Star double on track for bang!

They may not have things all their own way though because trainer Paul
Lafferty is oozing confidence about both the challengers he sends out in
the same two races.

Stage Star - first of a two pronged attack tonight from the
Bennet Bulana yard.

The first Bulana/Laff duel sees No.10 Stage Star (4/1 on Interbet,
retail is 5/2) taking on No.9 Cool Combo (3/1) in the first race. Stage
Star looks to be the right one and there is lots to like about him. In
his only start to date he was slow out the gates and slow to get
galloping but found a screaming finish to get within a head of eventual
winner Commander Cat who had all in his favour when winning from the
front. Stage Star can be expected to have benefited immensely from that
run which puts him at the top of the food-chain in this sort of company.
There are concerns though; he jumps from position 13 and a lot hinges on
how quickly he leaps out the gates. A slow start again may well have
similar consequences and he'll have little choice but to tuck in and
could get left with too much to make up. Having pointed out the risks,
the 4/1 stretch on Interbet is excellent value and hard to ignore.

No.9 Cool Combo (3/1) - rated by his trainer and a big run
expected tonight despite the long rest.

Looking to capitalize will be Cool Combo who in contrast gets the rail
draw and according to Laff will be a big runner (see Trainers' comments
at the end of this article for more detail)

Race 3 - Monetary Star (4/1) is reportedly 100% ready to fire!

Similarly in race 3 we have another Bulana/Laff showdown where the
contest is likely to be fought out by the two stables - No.1 Monetary
Star (Bulana) at 9/2 on Interbet vs the up and coming youngster No.13
Palm of Peace (Laff) stretched to 7/2 also on Interbet. Word from the
Bulana stable is that Monetary Star is in the condition of his life and
he's expected to win and nothing less. Paul Lafferty on the other hand
is of the opinion that Palm of Peace is a promising youngster who will
have no problem disposing of Monetary Star. Game on boys!

/>
Also in race 3 - Palm of Peace, rated as 'a very promising
young horse' by his trainer

For the numerologists there's some eyebrow raising relations here - both
Bulana's runners Stage Star and Monetary Star (races 1+3) jump from
stall gate 13, Laff's runner Palm of Peace is No.13 in the 3rd and jumps
from gate 9. Cool Combo is No.9 in the 1st and jumps from gate 1. Go
figure..!

Personally, I'm siding with Monetary Star to come up trumps, he's the
value bet of the day and it will be shocking to see him further back
than 2nd. He's 100% ready to fire, he tackles further which should be to
his benefit and after putting in an excellent effort last time, there's
more than enough to justify a wager here. Taking into account Laff's
comments, it would be prudent to get some cover going with his charge
Palm of Peace, best achieved in the form of an exacta.

Odds on favourite in the 4th race is Ginger Hill, rated 'fit
and ready to win' by Nathan Kotzen

After this things get significantly more difficult.. No.1 Ginger Hill
(race 4) looks to have a big chance but is a no-no at the cramped odds
of 8/10. Keep an eye on No.5 No.Icy Slopes (8/1 Interbet) who should
give her something to think about after failing to fire last time when
they met. Summer Cup entrant No.3 Phi (25/1 Interbet, 12/1 everywhere
else) also comes into the mix after a shocking last performance when
winning by 5 lengths at 45/1 with no previous form to speak of!

In race 5 the magnificent looking No.4 Presidential Jet (20/1) reserves
his best for Greyville and tries 2000m for the first time here. If he
settles then he's could get into the firing line and should be included
in everything.

In race 6 No.2 Kanevaro (5/2) should be competitive and looks to be a
reliable place getter once again. It will be no surprise to see him win
either as he's bound to pick up a race of this nature any day now. He
looked exceptionally good last time out and although he failed on that
occasion to catch Indecent Obsession who also runs here, I expect that
he will reverse the result tonight, leaving only race favourite No.1 Be
Assured (5/2) to get past.

Remember to factor in the coughing that's doing the rounds at Summerveld
and don't be surprised by a few below par performances on the night. In
this regard trainer Mark Dixon did mention he will be scoping all his
runners before the meeting to avoid racing them if there's any sign of
mucous build up.

Early claims for R25k (struck prior to raceday)

Race 4 No.12 ROYAL CLASH 33/1 to 16/1
Race 6 No.11 SECRET STORY 6/1 to 4/1
Race 7 No.12 NOTTINGHAM 20/1 to 10/1
Race 8 No.9 WINTERWONDERLAND 10/1 to 6/1

Trainers' comments -

Race 1
No.8 Prince Paseo 2/1F - May need it but should still be competitive
No.9 Cool Combo 3/1 - A decent horse, first run back following a knee
chip op. Not fully tuned but has lots in his favour No.10 Stage Star 4/1
(Interbet best stretch) - Has come on since first run. We're working to
improve his gate speed and a big run expected
No.3 Count Ivanski 10/1 - refer James Goodman podcast for comment
No.12 Vuyani 25/1 - Improvement expected

Race 2

No.1 Private Princess 5/2F - Note she has not been rested as stated in
the race card. In full work but unable to crack a decent draw until now.
She's fit and has shown improvement with blinkers and a tongue tie.
Chance
No.5 Quality Emblem 14/1 - Two runs for the stable, tries further, place
chance
No.10 Another Goat 20/1 - Has improved at home, will run a very good
race. Nice value bet.

Race 3
No.1 Monetary Star 9/2 - 100% ready
No.13 Palm of Peace 7/2 - Very promising young horse, big run expected
No.14 Fair Decree 66/1 - Refer Goodman podcast for comment

Race 4
No.1 Ginger Hill 8/10F - very fit, big runner
No.10 Day to remember 25/1 - course and distance suited

Race 5
No.4 Presidential Jet 20/1 - Should be suited to the extra, if he
settles will run a good race
No.5 Saubestre 7/1 - Will run a much better race
No.8 Roofing 8/1 - Ignore last in the soft he's very fit at present No.6
Road To War 33/1 - A better run expected

Race 6
No.2 Kanevaro 5/2F - Doing very well, form run expected

Race 7

No.5 Avalanche Way 5/1 - Right trip, throw into quartets
No.6 French Leader 6/1 - Fit and well. Only just gets the 1400m trip and
should be better suited to the Greyville circuit No.10 Royal Hero 33/1 -
Refer Goodman podcast for comments

Race 8

No.4 Born in Space 9/2 - Talented. This is a comeback run, may need it
No.6 Dance at Daylight 10/1 - Will run well

Just listened to the podcast and James Goodman says the false rail is at 14m and this nullifies the draw a bit.

How much do you think ? or are high draws still a big disadvantage?

This type of thing anoys me about racing the horse is getting long in the tooth but has to race off a mark where it cant win. A shorthead second is not a win yet the MR goes up after 2 seconds. Warsaw concerto beats him again this time by a larger margin - Both times 4kg claimers were on. This in my view means this horse cant win off a 66, yet the MR is still 75. These 4kg claimers can win races but not on horses that have incorrect MR.

That is my rant for the day - yes I did go out of the pick 6
