Galileo's Galaxy favourite to give Laird Guineas win

Preview: South Africa, Saturday 1.25pm GMT

Kenilworth: Bloodstock South Africa Cape Guineas (Grade 1) 1m, turf, 3yo

GALILEO'S GALAXY, an Australian-bred son of the 2001 Derby winner, is ante-post favourite to give champion trainer Charles Laird his first Cape Guineas win at Kenilworth on Saturday.

Anton Marcus's mount won his first two starts but was beaten by stable companion Curved Ball when hot favourite for The Dingaans, the top Classic trial in Johannesburg, three weeks ago.

Laird said: "Curved Ball could be something out of the ordinary and I think Galileo's Galaxy will be suited by the mile of the Kenilworth race. That said, it's not easy to come down to Cape Town and win."

This race is one of the few big ones to have eluded Mike Bass in the Leicester-born trainer's 33-year career but Captain's Secret has looked the part with impressive course wins in the Sophomore and the Cape Classic.

If there is a chink in his armour, it isprobably stamina. He has yet to race over the trip and, although he is a son of the 2000 winner Captain Al, most of the best on his dam's side were sprinters or 7f horses. His outside draw is also a negative.

Bass said: "He has shown that he is one of the best around but it will be very difficult from his wide draw. However, if he gets the breaks, we are hopeful he can do it."

Dean Kannemeyer has won this race three times in the last five seasons. Past Master, on paper his best chance, went lame during the week but the Milnerton trainer still has three others, most notably Noordhoek Flyer, who was second to Past Master in the Selangor.

Kannemeyer said: "Noordhoek Flyer was drawn in the bush that day and it proved too much for him. He put up a very good gallop on the course last week and he is improving."

Galileo’s Galaxy to reach for the stars in Cape Guineas

JACK MILNER

IT was in 1609, exactly 400 years ago, that Galileo Galilei demonstrated his first telescope to Venetian merchants. They were not too impressed with his invention and did not view it as having much commercial potential.

Six months later Galileo used his telescope to identify the three moons orbiting Jupiter and in doing so opened up the entire galaxy to the world.

It may be of less significance than the invention of the telescope but Charles Laird and Anton Marcus can deliver a Galileo’s Galaxy to the world of horseracing when the three-year-old colt takes his place in the R1-million BloodStock SA Cape Guineas over 1600m at Kenilworth on Saturday.

Adding some spice to the 10-race meeting that also includes the Grade 2 WPOTA Diadem Stakes over 1200m, is a Pick 6 carryover of R678,882, courtesy of Greyville’s Wednesday night meeting, with an estimated pool of R3-million

This is historically the first race of the season that brings together the best three-year-olds from all over the country. It is hard to ascertain which racing region has the better crop but this year that honour could go to Gauteng.

Galileo’s Galaxy is the lone representative from the province and his two victories from three starts, culminating in his 1.25-length second to stablemate Curved Ball in the Vodacom Dingaans at Turffontein last month, makes him the runner they will all have to beat.

He began his racing career by beating Bulsara in a Juvenile Plate over 1500m at Clairwood and then toyed with Galanthus in an Allowance Plate at Turffontein. "Curved Ball could be something out of the ordinary,’’ said Laird. "It is still unknown how good he is so what Galileo’s Galaxy did in that race was exceptional.

"To lead all the way at Turffontein, especially in sticky going, is very difficult. The way he fought on to claim second was an exceptional effort. But I do think he will be suited to the 1600m of Kenilworth. He should stay up to 2000m later on. His father won the Derby and he is out of a Star Way mare who has some stamina in her pedigree.’’

Laird confirmed that his runner had travelled well. "I gave him a canter after arriving. He was as fresh as ever and in very good shape. I’m very happy with him.’’

In the Western Cape no single runner has stood out in their three-year-old races - as was the case with Jay Peg in 2006-07 and Le Drakkar last year. Captain’s Secret looks the best of the bunch but jockey Bernard Fayd’Herbe will have to overcome No 15 draw. Captain’s Secret has never tried the distance but trainer Mike Bass is confident the Captain Al gelding will go 1600m.

"He is doing very well, I’m very happy with him,’’ he said. "He has shown that he is one of the best around. It will be very difficult from his wide draw, but if he gets the breaks we are hopeful he can do it. He’s got a shout.’’

The next best Cape runner looks to be Dean Kannemeyer’s Noordhoek Flyer, who did well to finish a 1.25-length second to stable companion Past Master in the Grade 2 Selangor Cup over the course and distance recently. He was drawn at No 15 in the 16-strong field that day but on this occasion will jump from barrier No 7.

Kannemeyer lost one his four runners when Past Master had to be withdrawn yesterday, reported to be lame on his off fore, but he still has Cree Lodge and Last Regal to back up Noordhoek Flyer in exotic permutations.

When analysing Noordhoek Flyer’s chances it may be indicative that Karl Neisius, who rode Captain’s Secret to victory in both the Sophomore Stakes and Cape Classic, has opted to ride the son of Pivotal.

"Noordhoek Flyer was drawn in the bush (in the Selangor Cup) and raced three wide the whole way. Karl tucked him in again in the straight before making his bid. The draw proved too much for him in the end, but he ran a great race,’’ said Kannemeyer.

"Noordhoek Flyer is a very, very good worker. He shows a lot at home. He has plenty of speed and should stay further than a mile, too. He put up a very good gallop at Kenilworth last Friday and is improving.’’

Nocturnal Affair, the mount of Felix Coetzee, was poorly drawn in both the Cape Classic and the Selangor But finished a 1.50-length second to Captain’s Secret in the first and a 2.85-length fifth behind Past Master in the second.

This time he’s drawn beautifully at No 2 and trainer Greg Ennion expects him to be competitive. "He is very well and everything has gone right. He put in an exceptional gallop on Tuesday in his last serious work for the race.

"Felix has stayed with him which is significant. Felix worked him twice a week before going to Hong Kong for the weekend and is very happy with him. There is no doubt whatsoever that he will stay the 1600m. Nothing has ever gone his way before, now he has everything in his favour and I wouldn’t be running him here if I didn’t think he could win.’’

Eastern Cape hopes will rest with Bold Silvano, who is clearly above average. The handicappers rate him a point better Galileo’s Galaxy, which is questionable, but he has been an impressive winner of his last three starts. Unfortunately, he will have it all to do from barrier No 13.

The Diadem Stakes is a three-horse affair between Kapil, Warm White Night and Villandry and despite the weight disadvantage with Kapil on their run in the Betting World Merchants, I am siding with Villandry.

The Merchants was run in exceptionally heavy going, which suited Kapil, while the dryer conditions now are sure to favour Vaughan Marshall’s runner. This will be his third run after a layoff and Villandry should be in top condition.

Warm White Night could split the pair but will need to improve on his disappointing third to Smart Banker at Turffontein last time he ran.
