Early fancy is Presvis

Record entry for Dubai World Cup night

ENTRIES for British and Irish cards on Saturday are made on Monday morning, but whatever the figures they will pale against the Dubai World Cup - which has received an astonishing 1,951 for eight races at Meydan on March 27.

Entries have been made from 23 countries - Britain provides 122 and Ireland ten - and the total surpasses the previous record of 1,683 for last year's Nad Al Sheba card.

The $10 million Dubai World Cup has attracted 288, including Gio Ponti, Vodka and Gloria De Campeao, while Dar Re Mi is among 242 for the Dubai Sheema Classic.

Prix de l'Abbaye winner TotalGallery is entered for the Al Quoz Sprint on turf and the Dubai Golden Shaheen on Tapeta.

His trainer Stan Moore visited Meydan last week to assess the Tapeta surface, and said on Sunday: "His main target is the King's Stand at Royal Ascot and if he runs in Dubai it will be only on World Cup night.

"He wouldn't run on the grass as it would be too quick for him, and I think it will need another year to settle in."

Dar Re Mi being aimed at $5m Sheema Classic

DAR RE MI is under consideration for the $5 million Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan on March 27, according to trainer John Gosden.

The five-year-old daughter of Singspiel could combine with Gosden's new stable jockey William Buick in a bid to succeed where others of her gender, including Ouija Board in 2006, have failed.

Conqueror of Sariska in the Group 1 YorkshireOaks last summer, Dar Re Mi had mixed fortunes on her subsequent travels, including when disqualified from first place in the Group 1 Prix Vermeille at Longchamp last September.

An honourable fifth to Sea The Stars on a return to Paris the following month in the Arc, Dar Re Mi signed off with an equally solid third to Conduit in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita last November.

Gosden said: "Dar ReMi has just started cantering and we are looking at the Sheema Classic for her."

Richard's Kid looks major Dubai contender

Santa Anita: San Antonio Hcap (Grade2) 1m1f, AW, 4yo+

RICHARD'S KID (Bob Baffert/Garrett Gomez) stamped himself a major Dubai World Cup contender on Sunday with a remarkable last-to-first charge down the rail to land a competitive running of the San Antonio.

The five-year-old, sent off 8-5 favourite, was purchased last month by Sheikh Mohammed's son Sheikh Rashid and was running for the first time in the colours of his Zabeel Racing stable.

The son of Lemon Drop Kidwas brought from the rear off a slow pace and sent through a gap on the fence to register a narrow victory over outsiders Dakota Phone and the ex-Michael Jarvis-trained Philatelist in a furious finish.

"They were going slow and he was a little rank," said trainer Bob Baffert.

"He was way back there. The pace was the deciding factor, and you can't really change his style.

"Turning for home I thought, 'Boy, they're going so slow', and I couldn't see him . . . but he was on the rail and he just shotthrough there."

Richard's Kid, winner of last year's Pacific Classic at Del Mar, will not run again before the World Cup, for which he was a best-priced 16-1 on Monday morning with British bookmakers.

"This was his prep race," he said. "Garrett got to know him a little bit today."

Gomez said: "I stayed down inside with him because there wasn't a whole lot I could do about it.

"Nobody was really stopping today so the only way we were going to over come that was to save ground. He's got a great kick."

Royal Ascot winner Giganticus beat only one home on his Californian debut.

Ryan Moore to replace Kieren Fallon on Presvis

RYAN MOORE is to replace Kieren Fallon on potential Dubai World Cup contender Presvis following the six-year-old's defeat in a three-runner race at Meydan last week.

However, scotching rumours the ride had caused a rift with the former champion jockey, Presvis's trainer Luca Cumani said the change was Fallon's idea.

Moore has been in the saddle for four of Presvis's five career victories, most notably when winning the Audemars Piguet QEII Cup at Sha Tin last April, while Fallon, who has a gentleman's agreement to ride for Cumani when available, has suffered frustration on the three occasions he has partnered the gelding who needs to be held up for a late run.

Cumani said: "I haven't taken Kieren off Presvis. He suggested that he doesn't have a good rapport with the horse and that I should perhaps let Ryan, who of course knows the horse well, have a sit on him and see what he thinks.

"There is no split between me and Kieren. He is riding Swop for me on Thursday, and he is riding five for me the following week

Shock defeat for Gio Ponti at Tampa Bay

Report: USA, Saturday

Tampa Bay Downs: Tampa Bay Breeders' Cup Stakes 1m½f, turf, 4yo+

DUBAI World Cup favourite Gio Ponti suffered a shock defeat in his prep run for the big race at Meydan on March 27 as he failed to peg back the resolute Karelian in the home straight, losing on the nod despite being sent off the heavily backed 1-5 favourite.

Jockey Ramon Dominguez settled Gio Ponti a few lengths behind the pacesetting 5-1 winner, ridden by Rosemary Homeister jnr, and brought his mount to challenge on the outside with a furlong to run.

However Karelian would not give up and the pair were locked in a hard-fought duel all the way to the line, with the result initially looking too close to call in what was expected to be a straightforward workout for the Christophe Clement-trained Gio Ponti.

Karelian, at eight the oldest in the field by two years, appeared to drift into Gio Ponti in the closing stages but, although Dominguez objected to the winner, the result stood.

Dual Eclipse Award winner Gio Ponti, having his first start since his second to unbeaten Zenyatta in the Breeders' Cup Classic last November, was fractious at the start. He decanted Dominguez in the stalls and had to be backed out to allow the pair to be reunited.

Gitano Hernando set for Winter Derby Trial

GITANO HERNANDO, as short as 8-1 third favourite for the world's richest race, reappears in the Lingfield Winter Derby Trial on Saturday in his build up to the $10 million Dubai World Cup at Meydan next month.

He could face a maximum of 13 rivals in the 1m2f contest including Settigano, a winner on Irish Derby day at the Curragh last season, and Suits Me, beaten a neck by Re Barolo in the race last season.

Kieren Fallon, who rode Gitano Hernando to victory in the Grade 1 Goodwood Stakes at Santa Anita lastOctober has been booked to ride him again.

His trainer Marco Botti said on Monday: "The Lingfield race has been the plan for him for a while. He has strengthened from three to four, he looks well and is coming on nicely, but he needs the race to put him 100 per cent for the World Cup. I am looking forward to running him.

"We will see how he comes out of Saturday's race before deciding when to send him to Dubai, but I would say it will probably be in the third week in March. When he went to Santa Anita he arrived only a week before, he's a very good traveller, the journey out there didn't seem to bother him at all."

After winning his maiden at Wolverhampton in November 2008, Gitano Hernando, a son of Hernando, made a low-key start to his three-year-old career by winning a handicap at Doncaster off a mark of just 84.

After a narrow defeat by South Easter in Chester's Dee Stakes in May, he was given a break and then went on to break the track record when winning a conditions event at Wolverhampton, before going on to Grade 1 glory at Santa Anita.

Botti added: "The Dubai World Cup is his target, and we'll see how he runs there beforemaking any more plans."
