Race 1 - Kruger Park
Race 2 Emperor Of Rome, Right Royal Man, Quiritus
Race 3 Cappie, Lian Dancer, Desert Oil
Race 4 Storm Crossing,Sonic Gang, Empowerment
Race 5 Softly Breezing, First Waltz, Sassy Anna
Race 6 Bella Jet, Outdoor Girl, Another Schlepp(Last start was not her run - blood revealed she was carrying a virus. Expect a better effort but we are battling to find her true distance. This is a very difficult field as many of the runners have reversed form against each other before. Hoping for a stake cheque but really no real confidence. Add her into the quartet as she could win at best and the strong fav could be rolled)
Race 7 10 Mighty Assassin(He could need this run - I'd love to have seen him have a 1000m sprint to clear the lungs. There seems to be no genuine 1200m horses in this field and strictly on previous form he should have a chance if he takes to the new course. He has the draw and comes out of a very strong formline. I would not be too suprised to see him win but at the same time it would not shock me to see him tailed off as my head says he may need futher now and might be short of a harr run. He has easily won over this C/D before.) Mystic, August Eight
Race 8 Petit Cheval(if he gets in) Supa Status, Icy Compliment, Oshinoko,

On a card that screams DANGER - especially if it rains - i would halve my normal bets and take a % PA (Quartets - double float two you like with the field as anything can happen today)
Best Bet -
Race 3 NO 1 CAPPIE - not confident but at 6-1 fair value

Value Bet
Race 6 No 10 Outdoor Girl

Best E/w
Race 8 No 4 Supa Status

Best Place bet
Race 2 No 3 Quiritus

Will not be taking the trip to the Vaal today as it's a long way home if my two run badly and New Year's Day is not far off so I'd not like to spoil it with a self-pity hangover if both run down the drain today.

Update from the "REVAMPED VAAL" 20mls rain and track in shocking condition - talk of moving meeting to grass(can you believe that!!!) they are trying their best to dry out the course but wet patches all over(we may have to scratch our horse if they race in the mud) - What a load of rubbish - why not spend real money on an all weather rather than waste on patching a badly designed sand pit!!!!

Charles Laird's scratchings have made a bit off a mess of my calculations as they appear in the Winning Form. I would now have to go with Storm Crossing as the obvious banker of the day.

Race 7 has been thrown wide open with Sonic Barrier out but include Press King in everything. This is not the soundest of horses, but he has ability and races on sand for the first time. He is by Gold Press, whose stock usually go very well on sand and he is down in class from his last start. This is the kind of ex-KZN performer that Barend Botes can do something with.

Emperor Of Rome hard to beat in the 2nd if he doesn't blow the start, Cinnamon Sugar could follow up even though it is always easy to overrate the form of easy maiden wins from bad fields on the sand (Fernanda is one classic example that comes to mind), and Oshinoko is very well handicapped if she can repeat her last run. The second horse bolted up next time and with hindsight Oshinoko probably got away lightly when her MR was only raised by the minimum two pounds. (No restrospective handicapping is allowed).

Have fun, and break a leg!

Oops, I posted before getting Mr H's update. Another racing cock-up in the making??

What a surprise that would be. Not.

Last time it rained during racing at the Vaal, the entire Sand Track seemed to flood very quickly

Check this out, Piere Strydom`s last 30 rides

Sad to see Wie Lil`Sally was fatally injured the other day and would surely have won.

A little positive news the sun is out and though very sloppy (and patchy in areas with wet spots) the late start might help to dry out the track - No horses have galloped on the track yet so we'll have to wait and see.

'Easy' solution, sell the lights at the big T and turn the inside track into an all weather.
