Sustain your festive cheer with Castle Ross!

Month long Pick 6 siege broken!
The R3888 Pick 6 payout at Greyville on Saturday night was a slap in the face for punters who have become accustomed to chasing the lotto-style payouts delivered each and every meeting during December-KZN. Check out the coulda/shoulda/wouldas..
December 2009 – KZN Pick 6 payouts
Average payout/Pick 6 for Dec-09 = R463k
Wed 30th - R573k
Sat 26th (Boxing day) - R684k CARRYOVER
Wed 23rd R243k
Sat 19th abandoned after 1st leg
Wed 16th - R679k CARRYOVER
Mon 14th - Abandoned
Sat 12th - Abandoned
Wed 9th - R517k
Sun 6th - R85k
Fri 4th - Abandoned
No doubt things have been tough lately yet the rays of hope always shine through and the odd opportunity to earn in between the train smashes has proved to be a friend in dark times. What next then because today’s racing at Clairwood Park is the typical out of season offering and one has to really look hard to find anything of betting substance in with a relative chance. Whilst the Pick6 won’t be paying the hundredK’s this time around it’s still no easy catch either.. without a banker or two to anchor perm costs.
In the first leg (race 4) odds-on favourite No.7 Franki Mercury will be the first choice banker for many, but do pay attention to the full claim on the Kotzen runner No.12 Watson’s Creek (4/1 into 22/10) that came through yesterday morning. If ever there’s a stable where the money must be respected, it’s Kotzen in KZN.
After an easy launcher the remaining legs are wide open for action but one well worth taking the proverbial closer look at is No.2 Castle Ross (5/2F) in the 8th race.
Castle Ross (pictured) caught the eye when winning his maiden easily at Scottsville back in September.

The going was heavy in the true sense of the word on that occasion and as you will see in the replay it was an untidy blanket finish marred with bumping and boring in the closing stages. Castle Ross never got the run of the race and found trouble on numerous occasions.. one can only assume to his detriment and costing him the opportunity to deliver his full-throttle best. I included him in my preview article on that occasion and expected nothing less than a win; under the circumstances another wager is surely in order this time again. He meets a poor field today and with barely anything worth mention, he should be able to get it right despite the hefty weight to shoulder. He is a sizeable and long-striding individual who is looking for much more ground but with the 600m Clairwood straight he will have ample time to get into gear and grind them down over the extended sprint trip. There should be nothing that outstays him in the closing stages and if he does get beaten it’s going to be by a march-stealer who skips away as they turn for home.
No.12 Guitar Shark (12/1) is a standout looking specimen but doesn’t have the record to match the looks. Got to give him credit though, he did beat Summer Cup winner Aslan over the same course and (near the same) distance two runs back when strumming away at the head of affairs in soft conditions. He fits the bill as the primary front running danger and if arriving at the track in a galloping mood he could be the one to give Castle Ross the medieval nut-chop. He may well just as easily run off the board altogether but at 12/1 perhaps this is a risk worth taking. Include in all bets
No.1 Time to Dance (7/1) is another old timer that keeps plugging away at the local scene, coincidently also a small but muscular powerhouse chestnut that likes to race handy much like Guitar Shark. With the imposing chestnut Castle Ross likely to lead them across the line, this could turn out to be a flashy looking finish between the three hey ho!!
Unfortunately Castle Ross has been spotted by the bookies and is priced up a weak favourite at 5/2, but he did drift right off the boards last time out after opening favourite then too, so it may pay to wait it out until the last minute this time and bang him on the Interbet Bookies’ exchange.
Welcome to 2010! and all the best with your punting endeavours.
