True Bob, have looked at this on other threads
The best is to consider if you win a maiden, how long does it last you for training fees, I stand under correction, but here is close to 7 months and the UK less than 2?

Now I understand why there is so much racing in the UK and horses are running almost on a weekly basis...

UK racing is in a state,Bookies empty,breeders upto their eyes in it and punters being fed shocking racing...

Maiden races carry extra prize money in UK so as to ensure owners get extra on the 1st win...ease the pain a bit!

Ex Rate approx £1-R11.8
Training Fees at MJR - 2009 Rates
* Basic Training Fee: £63.50 per day
* Transport U.K: £1.00 per horse per mile
* Transport Abroad: £1.00 per horse per mile – flights, ferries, tolls etc at cost
* Trainer's Expense (U.K.): None (Foreign Travel at cost) (No charge for sales)
* Lad's Expenses (U.K.) As per Joint National Council Agreement.Expenses are charged for one attendant per horse. You are not charged for the additional staff e.g. Driver, travelling manger, trainer etc.. A surcharge of £50 per horse is charged for Sunday runners to contribute towards statutory payments to all staff and days off in lieu.
* Blacksmith: No charge for exercise shoes. Racing plates £50.00.
* Veterinary: No charge for treatment or drugs routine or otherwise.Includes all veterinary charges including referrals, consultations and surgery
* Jockey's Retainers: No charge
* Commission on Sales: A commission of 5% will be charged on all horses sold out of the yard or within 30 days of leaving the yard. (Includes sales through selling or claiming races and Stallions syndicated to stand at stud)
* Commission On Purchases: No charge. There is no charge for expenses for visits to sales by Mark, his asistants, consultants, or veterinary surgeons including visits to sales abroad.
* Foreign Prize Money: Trainer's percentage deducted in line with U.K. percentages and allocated by Weatherby's
* Payment: Payment is required within 30 days of invoice. All accounts should be cleared before removal of horses.
* Sponsorship We will pay the sum of £75 plus VAT per horse per calendar month for the right to carry the Mark Johnston Racing logo on the paddock sheet, sweat sheet and lads clothing but not on owners colours. Owners wishing to take up this sponsorship should inform us.
Out Of Training Horses
Horses housed in separate, out-of-training, accommodation at Park Farm, Middleham will not be required to pay Weatherbys gallop fees or qualify for yard sponsorship. Veterinary fees, medicines and farriery will be charged at cost. All other conditions will apply as for in-training horses. These horses will not be ridden and will be housed in separate, purpose built accommodation, but will still be directly under the care of Mark Johnston and his veterinary team.
* Box Rest, turn out, Walker, etc : £35.00 per day
* At Grass £21.00 per day

So a horse in training with MJ will have a starting cost of £2k a month or R24K?

Hi Bob our costs vary depending on the trainer, but between R3,500 to R7,000 per month

True Bob but we have to consider in relationship to stakes.
So the best example without bringing in exchange rates into consideration is how many months keep do you get if your horse wins, a maiden race is a good starting point, however the "bigger" stakes are also far higher overseas than what we have to offer.
