Gaultier was used as a pacemaker by the Bass Stable in the Queens Plate ...
My question to owners who's horses are used as pace makers, how do come to agree to this with trainers and is their any compensation, considering the horse is not in the race to win or even earn a stake

Gaultier is co owned with the winner. It all boils down to tactics. PP needs the pace to be on and Im sure these tactics were discussed before the race. IMO theres nothing wrong with that. Terence Millard would always enter a pace maker in a race to guarantee a consistent pace, even if they were owned by someone else.

And Blue Tiger is part owned by the winning owner as well.He definately wasnt used as a pace maker...was off the bit early on and ran accordingly.....pity they didnt have a pace maker for River Jetez....Jalantra was used to slow up the race for Sparkling Gem but that also didnt work out!

I was about to say the same thing.
Absolutely farcical race.
Of course MRussia may well have won anyway, but you dont like to see a Gr1 decided like that

I can't remember the year but we had a NICE out and out sprinter and our trainer enterred him into that years SA Classic ofer 1800m at turffontein. We were still new in racing so we thought if the trainer elected to run him in this race he should have a good chance of running well????!?!?!?!?

Little did we know that we were only in the race to make the pace for the stable companion, which was backed from very long odds and duly ran on strong to finish 4th.......the winner was National Emblem.

Our horse ended up in Bloem then in Mauritius..........He may have ended up there anyway, but I'm sure running a 1200m horse over 1800m also did not help.

In fact I should have realised something was up when Robert Gardner (who knew our horse from this particular stable) wrote in an article for the Star..........

"...........(put our horses name here) has more chance of winning Wimbledon if you gave it a Tennis raquet"!!!!

So now you know.

Some years ago I owned a horse who had won 2 in a row coming from stone last.

We went into a grade 1 race next as a coupling, only to go flat out to the front and stop with 300 to go. I found out the trainer had told a mutual friend that my horse would be the rabbit.

Explains why there was no instructions to the jock in the parade ring, as was all planned. I didn't enjoy any of it, during or after, even though in hindsight the horse was never graded caliber. I sold immediately to partner.

Thanks JD and TH.
Mark Nesius so if you own a horse that used as a pacemaker for a horse owned by someone else, you wont mind it ?
Its all well for the trainer/ tactics / pace whatever, but what happens to the owner who's horse is used as a hare.
If theirs no consultation or agreement on this issue with the owner , then is it not ethical?
I'm sure theres many more owners with same experiences as Jack and Tommy
