Rhys van wyk for DURBAN academy ?

I've seen nothing official but I've heard from different sources that Rhys van wyk has been offered the riding master job in Durban ( to replece Paul Gadsby )

anyone else heard. ?

he was a top jock in his day....... once he got to the front in a race, he was near impossible to be beat ( he prob. won 9/10 in this position )

I think he will do well......... he was one of the BEST, & one of the strongest riders of his day.
He & Mrs. Hemming were virtually UNBEATABLE.

From Formgrids

RHYS VAN WYK has accepted the job as academy master and has given up his short training career,
"I have thought about it long and hard before I agreed, just when things are coming together in my yard this offer has come along, and I had to decide,
I have to be there on the 3rd Jan as the new intake arrives on the 5th, it will be hard to leave some of the nice horses in my care behind, LUBRICATOR was making such good improvement and one or two other younger horses showed promise, but this came along now and I feel I might make a difference as I have so much to give to the youngsters if they are willing to listen,
I can recall when I was small and weak and my dad gave me the chance I needed,
I grew up when jocks like Schoeman, Curling, Turner, Maree and Rhodes were at the top of their game so now I want to pass on my riding knowledge"

RHYS was at the top of his game when he was forced to retire from race riding through an arm injury and is one of the few jockeys worldwide that can be genuinely referred to as a master jockey

Great jock and was terrific in a finish especially when his money was down. I remember when Rhys was giving info to Kourie Jnr and the Late Rafi Goldstein, good luck to him but as a person I had little time for him.

I don't know the guy but he strikes me as the type who won't tolerate nonsense from his young charges. That has to be a good thing.
