Scottsville Pick 6 preview - 13thJan-10
by Leon Setaro

The usual tough card awaits at Scottsville today and this looks tailored for a decent Pick6 payout proportionate to actually catching the damn thing for a change!

In the first leg (race 4) short priced race favourite No.7 Mahubo was claimed early from 5/2 into 14/10 (18/10 currently on Interbet), and he has the most promising form in the race. Having said that, he may have his work cut out for him though because the Kotzen trained No.2 Royal Union (also claimed - 9/2 into 28/10 ) is decent and has the advantage of plum draw 3 against Mahubo’s bush jumper 12. The only other one with any chance of winning is No.4 Vai Quem Quer (7/2 retail, 4/1 Interbet) and I would think taking all three in this leg can be considered ‘going wide’. The top two mentioned should suffice with a slight preference for Royal Union but do note that the money has been coming in this morning for No.8 Savanah Park and with Delpech booked for the ride, the connections must be confident. For even wider perms, include No.3 Clever Flight (retail 10/1, Interbet 16/1), he’s got the ability to feature in this type of race but has been off his best recently.

in the 2nd leg (race 5) Goodman’s best bet of the day (listen to James Goodman podcast here ) is No.5 Emerald Wells at 2/1F who must be in with a chance but there are 1 or 2 that could trouble him. Interesting is No.7 Tres Forte (7/2) who sports an identical record to Emerald Wells having also won his maiden on attempt number 4 with a current race record of 1 win and 3 places from 6 starts.. and both are 5 years old. Not a lot to choose between these two and then there’s No.10 Fields of Omaha (retail 16/1, Interbet 40/1!) and No.9 Blue Danube (retail 20/1, Interbet 50/1) that also come into the reckoning with the potential to surprise on ability despite their recent form leaving a lot to be desired.

The 3rd leg (race 6) is hell-to-narrow-down and looking beyond the obvious, two that must be included are No.5 Molotov
(retail 6/1, Interbet 12/1) after his noteworthy strong finish last time out when coming from too far back, and No.3 Flying Day
(retail 14/1, Interbet 25/1) who’s got a bit of promise based on his eye-catching maiden win over the same course and distance. Include as many as you can afford in this race.

Another tough contest is leg4 (race 7) and with the stamina doubts that surround No.4 Fantastic Lady
(22/10 Interbet) she cannot be relied on to win this. It may be a small field of only 8 runners but barring No.6 Smanyo, it appears that they will all have to be included to gain any sort of security in this one.

In the 5th leg (race 8) this must surely be all over bar the shouting because No.1 Groovy Day (retail 6/10, Interbet 8/10) looks to have this field cold as long as she reproduces her current form. She's in the zone of always finding something to beat her but that looks highly unlikely to happen again in this field.. the weakest she’ll ever meet. This is the banker of the day although Goodman will disagree having stated in his podcast that this is in fact the lay of the day (at 6/10)!

The last leg/race again leaves much to be desired in terms of exposed form and since no one but sadists will find pleasure in sinking at the death in a Pick6, quite a few are needed here to keep the faith.

Interbet’s noteworthy stretches available at the time of writing -

Race 1 No.5 Carla’s Wisdom (2nd favourite) 7/2 retail, Interbet 8/1
Race 3 No.2 Monetary Star (2nd favourite) 3/1 retail, Interbet 5/1 (always thereabouts, good value)
Race 4 No.2 Royal Union (2nd Favourite) 28/10 retail, Interbet 4/1 (big chance, solid value)
No.8 Savanah Park 9/2 retail, Interbet 8/1 (has found support this morning)
Race 5 No.1 Cyclone Season
retail 9/2, Interbet 10/1

No.10 Fields of Omaha
retail 16/1, Interbet 40/1
(Could surprise, great long shot value)
Race 6 No.5 Molotov
retail 6/1, Interbet 12/1
(eye catching last run, worth a nibble at the price)
Race 9 No.8 Brush Stroke
18/10, Interbet 7/2
