Vet charges...

So I get an account from the vet today. My horse had her teeth done, and needed to be tranquilized by the vet, so that the horse dentist could sort out the teeth. So this is what's on the bill:

Sedate for Dentist - R181
(Drug number 1... no need for names) - R89.38
(Drug number 2) - R262.26
Injection I/V - R58.08
Travel and Mileage - R66.00

So now I ask... I am being charged for travel, as well as the action of actually giving the I/V injection... what is the first charge? Why not call it consultation fee??? These vets bills are getting quite ridiculous. I know vets need to earn a living, but still... the lameness consults etc are even more expensive! And on top of this was still the dentist's account! Am I just being niggly? I know owning horses is an expensive exercise, no need to remind me of that....

I have to agree VETS bills are totally unreasonable i never mind paying for professional expertise but being ripped off is not pleasant. Why are there no Vets employed or contracted to Phumelela or the NHRA where there is flat rates at a reasonable profit for the vets and they have their practise at the training centre so there is medical care basically 24 hrs.

And no matter if u are a wealthy or poor owner we are the people that make the whole of Horse Racing possible but obviously the powers that be don't give a shit about us or our horses.

We are all charged travel - love to work just for the Combined travel that is billed per visit to a single training centre - sometimes two of my horses are treated at the same yard each one is charged for travel- and there are maybe 8 others that need attention in the 30 odd yard

Mr Hawai:

Reminds us of....a certain Mr Naidoo?

Owner charged for shoes on a horse that was on the spelling farm is just one of many! Training & nom fees for a horse that died (owner was not told)!

Shirking to think what charges would have been listed if it was DR NAIDOO, Vet!!!!

Talk of being bleached (vetted) white!

Vet costs are the biggest challenge for owners in the game today on a worldwide basis. I am working with an important group right now to set up a model for how vet are compensated. If we get it going, it could help everybody in racing.

Veterinary advances have been good for everybody, but the manner in which vets bill for their services needs to be addressed.

In America, the problem is that vets convince the trainers that they need to medicate their horses before and after races. Before is not necessary and after is somewhat questionable. But the amount of money the vets make on these procedures buys a lot of homes in the country, bigger German automobiles and second and third homes.

POWERofONE - yes, an equine dentist charges abour R150 - R200, but in some cases it is necessary to sedate, and only the vet can do that.

I agree that there should be one charge for a drug, maybe one for travel, and one for doing the IV, but the second "consultation fee" is strange?!?

Mr Irwin... I, and I'm sure many others, appreciate that you are trying to address this tricky matter... Set fees for Vets are long overdue, as is an ombudsman to "police" these charges. There used to be one... probably a fossil by now...
