Two Tone is KZN’s great hope! - by Leon Setaro
Finally we get some decent action here in KZN and what a contrast this weekend’s meeting offers in comparison to recent contests. There’s a host of promising young horses carded to step out at Clairwood on Sunday, headed by the unbeaten Two Tone (race 6) who attempts four wins in a row over the sprint trip. He’s backed up by the exciting fillies Touch the Moon (race 4), Shoot the Breeze and Jo Piper (both race
and the list doesn’t stop there.. it’s the perfect way to cap off a gambling weekend after Saturday’s grade 1 Cape Flying Championship day at Kenilworth which offers a Pick 6 carryover to boot! Catch the Interbet previews on Interbet's Facebook racing news page. or on your mobile phone at news.interbet.co.za - Sunday morning from 09h00.
Two Tone at home on Thursday morning
It’s been a while since I made the trip out to Summerveld and in tune with the last few months, it was a mudfest of note as usual on Thursday morning. With little happening on the tracks I headed out to the Wendy Whitehead stable to catch up with one of KZN’s hopes for stardom, the unbeaten 3year gelding - Two Tone.
The first notion that begs notice is that Two Tone has been aptly named because he sports the highly unusual and clearly defined two tones of dark brown/black across his neck and forequarters. He’s also unusually loving and docile just like a petting animal, although I say this in the broader context of thoroughbreds because after having spent some time visiting Wendy’s horses, I quickly became aware that this is a yard full of the ‘calm and contented.’ Two Tone gives the impression that he’s going to relish racing beyond the sprint trips where he already holds an exemplary record of 3/3 thus far. Should this turn out to be the case, he could be something special in the making. Wendy was quick to point out that his immediate family were successful as sprinters and at this early stage of his career, she won’t be rushing him into anything beyond his measure. His short term aim is the grade 1 Golden Horse Casino Sprint at the end of May and he will get a prep run in-between then and now, this to gain experience at the notorious Scottsville strip. In the meantime he’s lined up for his 4th win in a row on Sunday where he takes on the strongest competition he’s met to date and does it as 18/10 favourite (opening price).
Two Tone is unbeaten in 3 starts to date; pictured here winning in action (from left), debut victory at Clairwood and 2 follow up wins at Greyville night racing
Laff picks good looking horses
Whilst at Summerveld I also stopped in at the Lafferty stable to get the latest. Paul has landed the job of training Thundering Jet for the Met and this is likely to be his final appearance in SA before heading off to race in Singapore. Laff also has a number of unraced 2 year olds with shares available, and there’s one or two he mentioned that are available as outright purchases. Drop him a mail at paul@laffertyandlips.co.za if you’d like to know more.
Happy punting..
