sentimental value - pp wins his 4th met and the whole of sa is happy except for 1 group of people, THE BOOKMAKERS.

so what now? i am sure there are many bookmakers out there today who are on the verge of bankruptcy if pp wins. queens plate/met doubles must be in there thousands. so what to do?

if you read my post correctly i mean thats in a sentimental world. reality is bookmakers will love it if pp loses. afterall they paid their clerks their salaries yesterday. wat a way to recover. anyway i hate bookmakers and i hope pp wins and cripples some of them.

Bubby,

I waited until after the race was run before replying to your post. I am sure you are relieved that bookmakers have managed to hang on to their jobs!

Now allow me to explain a little about bookmaking to you as I am afraid your sympathies are misplaced :

Firstly - the bookmakers themselves price up on every event. Prices do not mysteriously appear out of the ether - they are set by the trade to suit themselves. Market pressures are then applied and prices will be adjusted accordingly. But in the ante-post market they usually bet to a percentage of 140%+ so are merely acting as facilitators. And in a race such as the Met where form is a relatively transparent matter they are unlikely to be sandbagged by any 'spooks'.

If you were actually stupid enough to take a Pocket Power double comprising the Queen's Plate x Met your bet would have been subject to a 30% penalty at the time of striking it as it comprised a 'same horse double'. In effect it would allow the bookmaker to take back the second leg ( the Met ) at a PROFIT.

As a matter of record the price was never shortened after the Queen's Plate as many observers ( myself included ) thought the horse was flat out to win that event and might be vulnerable in the Met.

So, in summary, irrespective of the result I can assure you that EVERY bookmaker in South Africa would have loved to lay you that double whether the horse won or not!

So no need for sympathy.

why do you waste so much time writing the crap after this paragraph something i already know. you need to go back to school coz you cant read. bookmakers are scum. why do you bet? to beat them duh. if you loved them why bet at all. thats why you dont play favourites like these otherwise you will be f#$k morning til night. and yes garrick only stupid people take the double. thats why you watch races like this and enjoy without money on it mate. :) i use to work for bookmakers. i know why they scum. notice past tense. use to work. so i do not know why you cant read my posts properly.
