MET OFF TIME?
15 years 4 months ago
Good morning I was unaware that the running of the MET late and clashing with the Vaal caused a major problem for bookies and punters?
I had a call from a Pretoria bookmaker.
We were aware the Met was delayed due to the false start and the Vaal race was halted to run after the MET, the fact that they run the Vaal race before the Met caused much confusion with ATC bets etc, both bookies as well as punters were frustrated
Would be keen to have your inputs?
txs

Was watching online at work and didn`t realise it was the race from the Vaal that was loading(was on in background)until i sat down to watch the Met from the Vaal..
With no warning that they were switching, would also take away from the turnover people settled down to watch the Met and the Vaal race was not in their minds,so bound to be bets missed..

These so called little errors should not occur to such a well run concern, its costing people thousands, what a joke, bookies are fuming at the loss.

The Met 'delay' had nothing to do with the false start. Runners were still casually idling their way down to the start at the scheduled start time.
They then did their usual South African Racing thing of milling around. Then they started loading and thereafter the gates were opened/forced open or whatever.
I suspect the domino effect traces back to the Majorca Stakes objection.
But it remains unacceptable they they were not initially ready to jump at the scheduled time as they had 40 minutes to do so.

I feel the Vaal meeting should have been scheduled for races to jump 30 min before and after the Met.

As I say dont have the full story or implications but eg the bookie is holding a double River Jetez going on to the race at the Vaal so might be a case if River Jetez wins he has a liability he might want to take back?
With all bets computerised the Vaal race was supposed to go off after the Met, but with the Vaal going off before as River Jetez hits the line he has already lost the double.

But clearly no bleating about all/any doubles involving Pocket Power. Or Dan De Lago. Or Oracy. Or Big City Life. etc.
How come is it that some ( emphasize 'some' ) bookmakers cry into their pretzels whenever some punter miraculously flukes a winning bet??
Or alternatively treat the lucky guy as if he has committed a crime against the state.

Forgetting Bookmakers for a while - It was rather disturbing to have a split screen of the Met loading while the Vaal loaded - another case where an incorrect decision was made - the vaal should have been delayed to give the Met the airtime it deserved(I watched at home on teletrack so perhaps the ther channels had a clear link)
