RUDRA, the 2008 Summer Cup winner, returned from a 434-day rest to win the Listed Wolf Power Handicap over 1600m at Turffontein on Saturday.
Although he was reported fit and well after his injury-enforced layoff, Rudra wasn't expected to come back firing on all cylinders. He carried some condition on parade and was allowed to go off at 10-1 with stablemate Havasha all the rage at 2-1 and Regal Ranson next in the betting at 4-1.
Fenerbache set off at a good clip and led the field towards the home bend followed by Choisir, Dinner For One, Havasha and Rudra, who hugged the rail about seven lengths off the pace.
Fenerbache extended his lead into the home run, going five lengths clear, but was soo a spent force and came back to the pursuing pack, soon headed by Dinner For One and Choiser, with Rudra making a smart forward move.
At the 300m mark Choiser briefly hit the front, but even at this stage it was clear that Rudra was finishing the best. The son of Parade Leader got his head in front and then drew away under an easy ride to win going away by 2.25 lengths.
Choiser kept on for second ahead of a game Bhekinkosi, running on well, and Regal Ransom, who came from some way back. Havasha was one-paced down the straight and finished 5,25 lengths behind his stable companion.
"Rudra worked very well on Monday but he was still fat as you could see in the ring so this was a remarkable win,'' said jockey Johnny Geroudis.
Rudra has won four of 14 starts and R1,75 million in stakes. He is owned in partnership by Tony Moodley, Paul Bayvel, Ferdi and Liz Ladeira, Mike de Kock and Chris Gerber.[/b]Tabonline[/b]
