Getting high on Greyville Gold...by Leon Setaro
15 years 3 months ago
Racing is at the city track today and out of the blue we are presented with a meeting nothing short of spectacular if it’s profitable punting that you’re after. The action is on right from the first race and No.1 Fort Noble is the favourite at a drifting 15/10 (out from an opening call of evens) and if he does get beaten he surely won’t be further back than second. No.15 Paradise Island has drifted from 15/10 out to 18/10 and he looks to be the only one with any chance of getting past the favourite which stamps this race as easy pickings for punters. Assistant trainer Stuart Ferry is of the opinion that Paradise Island can win, having said that the sprint trips have been too short and 1900m is what he’s looking for. Take yourself an Interbet fixed odds win bet on Fort Noble and a Tote exacta cover bet with Paradise Island to beat home Fort Noble. This is no get rich quick scheme but with the anticipated stretches looming on the Interbet exchange and a close eye on the exacta will-pays, you could easily double your investment in preparation for the next race where more profiteering awaits.
Race 2
On form this is no easy task because there are 6 horses with excellent records in the maidens and that’s before factoring in the De Kock first timer No. 13 Imperial Pearl about which Nathan Kotzen (assistant trainer) has said, ‘He’s looking for further but it will be no surprise if he wins it’
Paraguayito seen here working with Karl Zechner on Friday morning, is the short priced favourite in race 2
No.14 Paraguayito is the short priced favourite at 12/10, this after being claimed early at 5/2. Trainer Tony Rivalland has chosen this one as his marginal ‘stable pick of the day’ even though he is expected to be at his best over further. And the form speaks for itself; 1 run for a flying finish second where the winner stole a march and skipped clear at the 400m to catch the very green Paraguayito unawares. When he did get going it was too late but he was powering away from the rest of the field in pursuit and with the usual expected improvement on second run, it’s clear why he will have his followers today. Against him is he has to now contend with going around the turn for the first time and jumping from gate 1 may not be in his favour - if he doesn’t come out flying then he’s likely to get cut off in the early stampede. This will play right into the hands of No.2 Makulu-kulu currently available at retail of 6/1 which represents outstanding value all things considered. He’s got the pace to rip out the stalls and if Paraguayito is to have any chance of catching him, then he’s going to have to stay right behind him from the leap or risk getting lost at sea. Getting back to Makulu-kulu, trainer Mike Miller reports that he’s firing fit and well but did caution that the 2nd run after a rest syndrome is always a concern. Personally, I’m willing to risk the gamble and believe he’s the one to beat and with everything in his favour, the 6/1 is a generous offering. He’s provided glimpses of his promise in previous outings; in particular his 4th in a strong field behind Mack M (incorrectly shown in Computaform as 3rd behind Delotto) being worthy of mention, as well as last time out when he finished clear second best after showing solid pace throughout. Back him for fixed odds wins and find a few of the form horses that could beat him and cover with exactas if you see the need. Paraguayito and Imperial Palace are the obvious two, but don’t be shy to dip out beyond them and go the boxed route because it’s all big score dividends if one of the outies surges through to fight it out with Makulu-kulu.
Day Dreamer (Billy Jacobson up) just before her workout on a misty Friday (19Feb) morning. The Summerveld clubhouse is in the background
In the 3rd race No.1 Day Dreamer at 18/10 is poised to crack her maiden victory and has only one to worry about with No.4 Groovy day (also at 18/10). Day Dreamer put in an exceptional run last time out in a strong maiden field and a repeat of that run should be more than adequate to dispense with this lot. Trainer Ivan Moore reports that she’s racing fit and he is expecting her to repeat her last effort. Groovy day is ultra consistent but the way she is performing, easier pickings will be needed for her to break the ice. Having said that, she could surprise and win, especially if Day Dreamer gets into trouble so it may be worth taking a cover bet to play it safe. Straight wins on both are the recommendation here; a primary wager on Day Dreamer with a cover on Groovy Day to recoup investments just in case one of them goes amiss and bombs the exacta which is unlikely to offer any value.. this is a clear 2 horse race after all and that’s plain for everyone to see.
Day Dreamer needs no encouragement in training; pictured here Friday morning putting in final pacework for today’s walk in the park.
Good fortune could persevere into the 4th race as well because a 276 day rest hangs over the favourite No.1 Tanglewood (5/2) and he’s going to need his best to hold off No.4 Spirit of Success (4/1) who has put in two ‘ready to win’ runs since changing stables from Tony Rivalland to Kom Naidoo. He’s come from the back of the field on both occasions, flying through late for minor money and probably putting in fastest 400m to finish times in the process. He now progresses to 1600m which should be right in his zone, and against this mediocre field he should either win it or get beaten only by Tanglewood. No reason to veer away from the obvious here, fixed odds win bet on Spirit of Success, cover Exacta Tanglewood to win, Spirit of Success to run second if the payout offers a decent return.
In the 5th race No.7 Antonia Fraser is good ol’ solid value at 7/1 and on a line through Tialata should comfortably hold off race favourite No.3 Rapid Flow (7/2). Antonia looks to be on the rise and her last win was excellent although only at maiden level. She now comes into a different league entirely having to face up to the Brown stalwarts No.1 Miss Chatty (10/1) and No.1 Miss Lovita (8/1) but since neither of them have been firing on all cylinders in recent times, Antonia Fraser could easily turn out to be fit and capable enough to lead this field from launch to winning salute. The rest are average and anything could pop up from the throng making this a tough race to get through the exotics. Go wide in the Pick6 and if you’re bored and can’t wait for the next race, take a straight win nibble on Antonia Fraser’s 7/1.
Mr. Mickey Mouse with Chips Taylor aboard
In the 6th race No.3 Mr. Mickey Mouse (5/2F) meets No.7 Upity Ann (5/2F) on 1kg worse terms although I wouldn’t worry much about that, particularly when it comes to Mr. Mickey Mouse who just oozes the power-look and will brush off a kg without losing a breath over it. He’s looking superb at the moment and trainer Tony Rivalland reports that he’s fitter than he was for his last run and will be tucked in this time around on recommendation from rider Anthony Delpech, who feels he will do better if given a chance and kept out the early rush. Upity Ann has reached the point now where she is one to follow but I can’t shake the niggle that this is a filly going up against a male rival that epitomizes masculine strength! One to watch is No.1 Alle Breve (7/1) who could turn out to be anything as a 3 year old after a promising early career but overall this does appear to be a Mr. Mickey Mouse picking. At 5/2 he’s hardly a punting highlight on the day but if you’re happy with a 250% profit margin and a thriller run for your money, this is it.
Mr. Mickey Mouse was given an easy workout on Friday morning (pictured)
In the 8th race the impressive looking No.3 Air Pocket (9/2F) has a bright future ahead of her but gets hindered here by the bad-news draw of 14. In her last start at Clairwood she was one stride short of being tailed off at when turning for home and then put in a sustained finish to flash onto the scene late behind the two excellent fillies Secret Babe and Kushoni Langa. Now it’s Greyville with the short run in and that’s not going to help her chances if she gets stuck at the back again. She did however show plenty early pace when winning her maiden over 1200m so the come-from-behind concerns may not even materialize.. only the race will tell. There’s also the distinct possibility that she may turn out too classy and win from anywhere. 9/2 – great price! No.7 Bezame (7/1) is probably the main danger with No.1 Zoot (7/1) also in contention after an easy maiden win. Keep a beady eye on No.11 Once Weekly at 25/1, this filly is a lot better than her form suggests and she’s the sort of roughie to make merry with the Pick6 dividend.
In the 9th race No.1 Infrarouge (31/F) and No.2 Eternal Flame (33/10) are the obvious two on form but don’t leave out No.6 Flutterbye (8/1) who is highly rated by his trainer, or No.14 Salishan (8/1), another one highly thought of (by previous stable).
---
It’s a rare beauty of a punting card (or so we hope) and the money’s there to be made early in the first 4 races but things may just keep rolling on right through with just about every race promising something worthwhile. The key to a big score looks to be with multiples, there’s 6 ‘strong chance’ horses to choose from so get stuck into all the double and multiple combos you can afford - some of them are sure to land.
Remember, you can take all your Phumelela/Gold Circle Tote bets direct with Interbet’s online Tote agency using your Interbet funds, so there’s no need to maintain two betting accounts – all you need is Interbet. For fixed odds, get ready for the big price stretches because the Interbet exchange will get buzzing shortly (this Sunday morning) so login and be ready to pounce.
Happy Punting!
