It has begun.. by Leon Setaro
We’re a shade over a month and half away from the official start of KZN’s Winter Season but a glance at the racing calendar will reveal that the action begins right here right now at Clairwood Park. Today is the start of the KZN features and from here they roll on almost weekly, right through the next 6 months awesome!
To open proceedings today we get a treble header at the Garden course with the Umsinzi Handicap, the Sentinel Stakes and the King’s Pact Stakes. Next weekend is the Fever Tree Handicap and on the 28th the Strelitzia stakes. April unveils a further 8 KZN feature races for the month, 5 of which are black type. By this time the visiting trainers will be flooding in for the Winter season proper that kicks off at the start of May.. this is how we roll in KZN!
When it comes to punting, Clairwood Park is surely KZN’s fairest play with its excellent drainage, long home straight and quality turf. But can we make money on it today? It’s a tricky card and with no stand out bets at a decent price on offer, it’s up to luck to squeeze in a few winners. James Goodman sees things differently however and claims to have found a few good things on the card. Listen to his audio podcast sponsored by Interbet Here

Val de Ra ha ha ha..
Undoubtedly the highlight of the afternoon’s racing package is the appearance of super-filly Val De Ra (6/10) who aims for her forth straight victory and the continuance of her blemish-free unbeaten record. Here in KZN we are always hoping for a local champ and in recent months we’ve seen 3 unbeaten horses with 3 wins under the belt, all fail when attempting the fourth. Expect to see lots more to come from Two Tone, Purple Lake and Case Stated but when it comes to the unbeaten, they must now step aside for Val De Ra. This filly has been as impressive as it gets starting her career by running current top Dubai campaigner ‘Raihana’ off her feet by 4 lengths, and then following up a month later with the pummeling of a top quality juvenile field during peak KZN season at Greyville. She bled on that occasion and was off the race tracks for 8 months before coming back in mind-bending style at Scottsville last month for a must see performance – Click here to watch the video replay. It’s all systems go from the stable and as the picture shows, she’s firing fit so expect nothing less than a devastating winning display.
The Coniston connection at Clairwood today
Legal Account (Lake Coniston) yesterday at Summerveld
Purple Lake (Lake Coniston) file pic.
The stallion Lake Coniston finds himself in a plum position with his two daughters flying the ball-bag high - Purple Lake and Legal Account compete in races 5 and 6 respectively. Purple Lake has won 3 from 4 including a raid to JHB for feature race victory. Legal Account has raced only once where she came from impossibly far back to wear down and defeat English Aspen. In the process they drew away from the rest of the field putting 6 lengths between themselves and the 3rd placed Lydia Listen, herself an impressive debut winner from Jhb. As for the local form, there's even more to like considering English Aspen won her debut by 6 lengths thrashing National Guru who in turn went on to win her maiden by 4. With the expected improvement from Legal Account, she should find herself well in against this field and offers value at 4/1.
Tea Break pictured here at the Kom Naidoo stables yesterday morning
Tea Break (6/1) takes her place in the Umsinzi Handicap and she has been a revelation since relocating (from Kimberley) to KZN where she has reeled off 3 standout wins from 5 starts. Comparing her condition now to when she first started her KZN career she has really blossomed into a fine looking mare and if she can stay sound then expect more improvement to come. At 6/1 she’s worth a lucky spin despite taking on the hard knockers Bold Wonder, Maritime Mist and Silver Fantasy.
