MDK injuries

After another injury to MDK stable star Eagle Mountain I started thinking about other injuries to his horses. If I recall Horse Chestnut, Sun Classique and Archipenko suffered a similar fate. Silver Mist, Honour Devil, Kildonan and Our Giant to name a few are also injured although Im not sure if they've been retired yet.

We all know he is up there with the best in the world, his results speak for themselves. Now I have no idea what it takes to train a horse so from an outsider and pretty clueless observers perspective are these injuries just par for the course? Has he just been simply unlucky?

I would assume that equine athletes are always at serious risk of injury being on the edge of their athletic ability most of the time. Just interested to hear some opinions, however uninformed they may be!

Race horses are Fragile, they used to say that Martin Pipe overtrained his horses and many of the `big` owners refused to send him any ammo.Im not defending MDK but injuries happen and when you have a yard as big as his,you are bound to get a few?

its the good ones that always seem to get injured as the slow ones dont go fast enough to injure themselves

.....for fear of being hunted down and sued....I have to be a bit delicate here....MDK is unarguably the best in the land....his results speak for themselves....however when want to achieve what he has....you cannot be too "soft" on your horses.....and yes horses are basically fragile and very prone to injury.....further when you have these very large strings.....you cannot afford to single out the horses that cannot stand up to the rigours of working/training and racing.....however when you do spot something amiss it can be remidied early preventing further and more serious injury. Mike and his team do this and have the personal and equipment(treadmill etc) to treat and condition and get these horses back to performing. Mike has for a long time spoken out about local traing conditions bad training tracks etc.....and even with all that he has so far achieved....no one seems to be listening....8-)

Sasky, all the horses you mention are grade 1 performed horses who have got many huge races behind them. Some of them embarked on a second career with MdK.

Every race takes it's toll in preparation wear and tear in addition to the major races themselves.

I think it would be more astute to marvel at how well they've managed to do, or how he managed to keep or get older horses going again than to comment that finally they finally call it a day. The bloke achieves the near impossible, travelling and racing horses as no South African has come close to, and your great observation is some of them break down.

To see what he's done and come up with "MDK Injuries" is a sour subject line with sour implications, and pretty pathetic. But you are entitled to think what you want.

I reckon its an achievement what he has done with EAGLE MOUNTAIN... The horse was plagued with problems before MDK even got him

Jack Dash, I have made mention many times of the genius of the man, and am fully aware how often he has improved the performance of so many under his care.

Furthermore there was no intention to imply that his horses well being is not his number 1 priority and I have no doubt any injury is devastating to MDK.

My post was merely to highlight some injuries he has had to star performers and whether the number of these are disproportionate, for whatever reason.

There may be no point or merit to even debate anything at all but I fail to see what the problem with the title is when that is what my post is exactly about.

Anyway take it as you wish...
