A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff - grass - .

Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, and a horse produces clumps of dried grass.

Why do you suppose that is?'

NICCI GARNER - Pirate's Gold has never run at Arlington before, but if he takes to the track, he rates the one they’ll all have to catch in Race 3 over 1800m tomorrow.

The Alan Greeff-trained gelding relocated from Glen Kotzen’s yard in the Western Cape to Alan Greeff early this year and has had two runs for his new stable. In the first, he stayed on well to finish a 3.25-length third behind Vangelis over 1600m at Fairview where Chou Choo Wooga (2kg worse off) was a neck back in third with Ecole Militaire (2kg worse off) another head behind in fifth. Moscow Circus faded to ninth.

That’s the form-line to rely on because Pirate’s Gold probably fell flat in his second run after a rest last time out. He drifted in the betting and hung in the final 400m before staying on at one pace to finish a 3.25-length fifth behind Vangelis with Ecole Militaire (2kg worse off) more than three lengths ahead of him in second place.

Pirate’s Gold is effective at this 200m longer distance and a better run is expected from him.
Ecole Militaire is a consistent money-spinner and will earn a stake cheque again, while Chou Choo Wooga was disappointing last time out after losing two lengths at the start of a 2200m race. He will do better over this shorter distance. None of the other runners can be ignored.

In the MR 89 Handicap over 1600m, Race 7, Club Montreal could make amends for a poor effort in a 1200m sprint at Kenilworth last month in his comeback from a layoff. He started slowly that day and made up some ground before getting tired. That run will have brought him on immensely and if he is anywhere near peak fitness, he should have little trouble taking Evolving Tactics and Revere’s measure.

Strydom is the money man. He will crack it on Cool Spender in the 5th at Turffontein.
