Yes but rough as hell, I wonder how many bodies are at the bottom of Baltimore Harbour. Lots of crime in Baltimore.

I know they tried to clean the place up a little when I was there. The harbour is in better shape but the inner city is struggling!

Chesapeake Bay is prime location for real eastate as there are heaps of old derelict warehouses along there.

Crossing’, `Sugar’ to keep unbeaten sand records intact

JACK MILNER
- Trainer Mike de Kock once again performed with aplomb on the world stage with a fine display at the Dubai World Cup on Saturday so it may be a little mundane for him to start focusing again on sand racing at the Vaal.

He sends out two runners on Tuesday and both have strong winning claims.Nudge Nudge will be making his debut on the sand in Race 5, a MR 78 Handicap over 1800m while Storm Crossing, who is unbeaten in two runs at the track, is likely to be priced up favourite for the Listed Riverside Handicap over 1450m.

Only the race will tell whether Nudge Nudge will take to the surface but there is no doubt about Storm Crossing’s ability to handle the sand track. On his first appearance here in a 1600m event he took the lead a long way out and beat Sonic Barrier far easier than the 2.25-lengths suggest.

His next start was over 1450m and once again it proved no problem for jockey Johnny Geroudis as he galloped clear to beat Mighty Assassin by two lengths. Storm Crossing returned to the turf in a 1450m race on Turffontein’s inside track and was backed from 5-1 to 3-1 favourite. However, after leading through the 400m mark he faded out to finish 12th, 8.75 lengths off the Iwannadance.

The main concern with three-year-old Western Winter gelding is that he is usually reported to be making a breathing noise in running. One is never sure how this will affect his performance on the day.

Should Storm Crossing falter then Alimony could be waiting to strike. Trainer St John Gray says the seven-year-old has lost none of zest for racing and he showed that last time out when finishing a 1.50-length second to Sayadaw. In fact, the 2008 Emerald Cup winner looked all over a winner until Sean Tarry’s runner swooped down late. He should improve on that feat.

Tarry has two runners in Mystic and Incomodo and the latter, who has won two of his three starts on the sand, looks to have the edge. Two runs back he beat stablemate Mystic by 12.50 lengths and on that display their looks little chance of a form reversal, even with the 5kg pull.

However, it is interesting to note that Piere Strydom, who has ridden both to victory, is on Mystic and if he does get going in time, he may be able to achieve what on paper appears impossible.

The other runner to consider is Charles Laird’s Deep Water. He looked the winner 200m out until both Alimony and Sayadaw came screeching past him and with Anton Marcus up he must come into the reckoning.

In the Listed Nkosazana Stakes for fillies and mares it is hard to look past Roy Magner’s Cinnamon Sugar. She was well backed last time and did not disappoint when beating Miss Turbulence by 1.50 lengths and extended her sand winning streak to three from three. Devin Habib has ridden her in all of her starts and from a No 2 draw, the pair looks hard to beat.

Michael Azzie sends out Romantic Girl and Muamba and it could be the latter who chases Cinnamon Sugar home. She is an unknown quantity on the sand but with Derreck David in a buoyant mood following his victory on Pierre Jourdan in the SA Classic on Saturday, she should be right there.

Paul Matchett’s Mat Gold loves the sand and was only caught close home last time by Bedloe’s Island and Bella Jet in an 1800m race. She has yet to win over 1450m but Marthinus Mienie used different tactics last time by having her up with the pace and if he can do the same over this shorter trip, she should make them all run.

I think Mat Gold has a big place chance - perhaps swingers with Cinnamon Sugar or Apple Princess(always tries on sand)
