Nominations Champions Day
15 years 2 months ago
PHUMELELA MEDIA RELEASE
Champions Day, which takes place at Turffontein Racecourse on Saturday 24 April 2010, will certainly live up to its name should Pierre Jourdan win the R1.5-million SA Derby.
A victory in the Grade 1 race over 2450m will see him become only the second winner of the SASCOC Triple Crown, and his connections will walk away with a bonus cheque of R2-million. Pierre Jourdan earned the right to emulate the great Horse Chestnut, who won the Triple Crown in 1999, but capturing the Gauteng Guineas in February and the SA Classic last month.
Gary Alexander’s runner will face 13 challengers, headed up by Mike de Kock’s Irish Flame who was third in the SA Classic. The son of Dynasty will need to find 2.25 lengths on Pierre Jourdan but the Classic was his first run for the De Kock stable and he is also likely to be better suited to the extra 650m.
There is a newcomer on the scene in the form of Conquered Dream who will be challenging both of them for top honours. Champion trainer Charles Laird’s runner staked his claim by winning the Derby Trial in impressive style at Turffontein on Sunday.
Champions Day sees the running of eight Graded race, including the SA Derby, the R2-million Champions Challenge over 2000m and the R1-million Computaform Sprint over 1000m, which are all Grade 1 races.
Also run on the day run are the R750,000 SA Oaks, the R500,000 Nursery and R400,000 Fillies Nursery, both over 1160m, the R500,000 Gold Bowl over 3200m and the R220,000 Camellia Stakes – all Grade 2 races.
Five runners have been supplemented into the Champions Challenge field – Catmandu, Lion’s Blood, Queen’s Bay, Strategic News and Vertical Takeoff. Last year’s winner Smart Banker will attempt to score a feature-race double but will face a strong challenge from 2008 Summer Cup victor Rudra.
Although De Kock has also entered Mother Russia, he has intimated that she is unlikely to contest this race and that will leave Rudra as his lone entry.
Laird has brought out the big guns to back up Smart Banker and has nominated all of Oracy, Dan De Lago, Crown Of Power and Eight Street.
Last year’s Computaform Sprint was voted by many as the race of the year and it could be as exciting this year with all of the last three winners entered to take their places in the field. Mythical Flight (course record holder and 2007 winner), JJ The Jet Plane (2008) and Private Jet (2009) could face a strong challenge from Warm White Night and speedy filly Mana Mou.
Third supplementary entries for the Champions Challenge close at 11am on Tuesday 13 April, after which the weights and draws will be announced.
For all the others feature events supplementary entries close on Monday 12 April. Declarations for all races close at 11am on Thursday 15 April.

Its such a pity we have no real stayers of value in this country! The gold Bowl has been thin now for many years. I would love to see a full field of 20 runners take part in this great race like in the old days.
Remember Ormond Ferarris having almost half the field.....The great Averof, Zelator and more recently Mosszao to name but a very few!
Anyway the rest of the fields look pretty competative so we look forward to some good racing!

Must agree looks like being a superb day however smallish fields for the money on offer, lucky owners that have a decent horse or stayer.

very dissapointing nominations and some of the horses nominated must have either very optimistic trainers or wealthy owners who can afford to throw away nom money...maybe time for phum to review their feature season as they getting pathetically weak fields

Three former winners of the Computaform Sprint could be set to line up (Mythical Flight, JJ and Private Jet), but current form surely points to Warm White Night as the horse to beat. We shall see if any of the past winners can find the form which won them the race before and go in for a second time.
Best bet of the day at this stage could be Ibrox Park in the Fillies Nursery.

PHUMELELA MEDIA RELEASE
SUBJECT: Draws and supplementary entries for Champions Day
DATE: Tuesday 13 April 2010
RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited
Pierre Jourdan will have the benefit of a No 3 draw or better on Champions Day when he attempts to become only the second horse in South Africa to win the SASCOC Triple Crown. Gary Alexander’s charge won the first two legs and will now compete for the R2-million bonus in the Grade 1 SA Derby over 2450m at Turffontein on Saturday 24 April.
The R1.5-million SA Derby is one of eight feature races on the day with three Grade 1 events. Also run on the day are the R2-million Champions Challenge over 2000m and the R1-million Computaform Sprint over 1000m.
Pierre Jourdan showed his class when winning the SA Classic, the second leg of the Triple Crown, from a poor draw, but this time jockey Derreck David will not have to worry about that problem. Should Pierre Jourdan be victorious he will follow in the footsteps of the great Horse Chestnut who won the Triple Crown in 1999.
Mike de Kock will also be pleased his principal runner, Irish Flame, has been drawn at No 6. He ran third in the SA Classic and at this stage appears to be Pierre Jourdan’s chief rival.
De Kock will also be delighted that Rudra will be at pole position for the Champions Challenge. The 2008 Summer Cup winner has slowly been regaining his old form and looks the one they will all have to beat.
Last year’s winner, Smart Banker, can never be written off and he was reasonably well drawn at No 10. He is one of five runners entered from the powerful Charles Laird yard.
Supplementary entries closed on Monday and the only two new nominations for the Grade 1 races came in the Computaform Sprint where Lightning Lecture and Esterel joined the line-up.
Final declarations take place at 11am on Thursday.

PHUMELELA MEDIA RELEASE
SUBJECT: Intercontinental Village
DATE: Tuesday 13 April
RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited
Champions Day at Turffontein on Saturday 24 April will have something for everyone, ranging from high-class racing to an intercontinental village and a Super Cars display.
Champions Day is Africa’s raceday and eight feature races will be run, including the R2-million Champions Challenge and the R1.5-million SA Derby.
The highlight of the non-racing entertainment will be an intercontinental village on the east side of the parade ring.
The village will showcase the crafts, foods, entertainment and traditions of seven countries – China, Greece, India, Italy, Lebanon, Portugal and South Africa – and will incorporate a beer festival in a 500-seater marquee. The entertainment will include the national dance of each participating country.
There will be loads of fun for the kids, including pony rides, jumping castles, face painting, bungee jumping and a Ferris wheel. Admission to the racecourse and all entertainment for children is free.
Phumelela is giving away R100 000 to charity on the day. Similar to Phumelela’s famous Charity Mile, each of the participating charities will be represented by a runner in the International Charity Challenge and the finishing order will determine the amount won by each charity.
Each community participating in the intercontinental village will nominate a charity, as well as Super Cars and Caxton, the official media partner of Champions Day.
The Super Cars display will include Ferraris, Lamborghini’s and other exotic sports cars.
Treat yourself to a great day – get to Champions Day on Saturday!

PHUMELELA MEDIA RELEASE
SUBJECT: Final fields for Champions Day
DATE: Thursday 15 April 2010
RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited
Pierre Jourdan and all of his serious challengers stood their ground and the R1.5-million SA Derby is heading for a thrilling climax on Champions Day at Turffontein.
Gary Alexander’s runner is looking to rewrite the record books when he lines up for the Grade 1 race over 1450m on Saturday 24 April by becoming only the second horse in history to win the SASCOC Triple Crown. In February he won the Gauteng Guineas and last month the SA Classic to give him the first two legs.
Derreck David rode him to victory in both of those starts and has never lost a race on the son of Parade Leader. Pierre Jourdan has won six of his seven starts and was beaten only a short head by Havasha in the race he lost.
The Grade 1 SA Derby is one of eight Graded races to be run on the day, and it includes the Champions Challenge (G1) over 2000m and the Computaform Sprint (G1) over 1000m.
Most people rate Mike de Kock’s Irish Flame as the runner capable of stopping Pierre Jourdan’s bid for greatness. While there may be stamina doubts about the Triple Crown-seeking runner, the distance should prove no problem for Irish Flame.
De Kock also has another out-and-out stayer in the form of Ilsanpietro as well as Happy Valley, who ran a positive fourth over 2400m at the Vaal on Thursday.
Mike Azzie has Service Ace who should be looking for this distance, while one needs to keep an eye on Charles Laird’s Conquered Dream, a talented stayer in the making.
Jockey Kevin Shea will return to ride Rudra in the R2-million Champions Challenge over 2000m. Shea was in the irons when Rudra won the Summer Cup over his course and distance and it comes as no surprise that De Kock has engaged him once again. As indicated earlier, De Kock has withdrawn Mother Russia and will aim her at the Vodacom Durban July. That leaves Rudra as the only stable representative.
Champion trainer Charles Laird will be hoping Smart Banker will be able to pull off the double. He won the race last year and under the weight-for-age plus penalties conditions, carries the same weight as last year. He is beautifully drawn at No 3 and has Anton Marcus up.
The Computaform Sprint sets up a mouth-watering clash between Warm White Night, last year’s champion Private Jet and 2007 winner Mythical Flight. Trainer Lucky Houdalakis has decided JJ The Jet Plane will not be fully wound up in time for the race and has pulled him out while Sean Tarry has also withdrawn his top-class filly Mana Mou.
