Mike de Kock, who has yards in Johannesburg and Durban, will remain the Dubai Sheikh’s No 1 trainer with Kannemeyer providing selected members of the string with a Cape base.

De Kock said that initially Kannemeyer would be sent "a few fillies who need the ground a bit softer in winter and who I believe can sneak some black type in a weaker centre’’.

Kannemeyer met his new patron on a buying trip to the Argentine and, according to De Kock, "they liked him and were comfortable with him’’.

Five imported maiden fillies are already with Kannemeyer who believes "another three or four’’ are still to come in.

"They’ve got nice pedigrees and I’ll see what we can do with them in the off-season,’’ Kannemeyer said. "They are horses the Sheikh would like to breed with and maybe the change of scenery will bring about some improvement.’’

The Sheikh has a expanding string of breeding stock in South Africa and Kannemeyer’s role is likely to grow substantially in the future.
