JACK MILNER - The Northern Cape Stayers Handicap over 2200m at Flamingo Park this afternoon has attracted a useful field and a lot could depend on whether Nevvay takes a liking to the sand track

The former Mike Bass inmate makes his debut for Peter Miller and as last year’s winner of the Grade 3 Lonsdale Stirrup Cup over 2400m at Greyville, he surely has the necessary credentials to win here.


Since then he has failed to place in six subsequent races and it seems curious that his merit rating has dropped just two points since June last year. So a lot will also depend on whether the change of scenery has restored some of Nevvay’s zest for racing.


Should Gunter Wrogemann be unable to score, Miller has a useful back up in the form of tried-and-trusted Scorpion King. He has been in prolific form of late and after a 3.25-length victory over E-Fuel in his antepenultimate start and a 10-length victory over the course and distance last time out, Gerrit Schlechter’s mount must have a lively chance.


Jacques Strydom brings his useful stayer, Arctic Fleece, up from Port Elizabeth and like Nevvay, he will be a massive runner should he adapt to the surface. The further they go the better he likes it and he has been a winner of the Listed Port Elizabeth Gold Cup, which, over 3600m, is the longest race staged in South Africa. Deon Sampson gets the ride.


Mar Alberto was the runner-up to Scorpion King last time and although it seems unlikely for him to turn around a 10-length deficit with just a 1.5kg weight pull, that was his first outing at Flamingo Park and he could improve.
