NEW TURF CARRIERS – WEEKEND OF THOROUGHBRED HORSERACING

Friday, 7 May - Fairview Race course and Sunday, 9 May 2010 - Arlington Race Course



Port Elizabeth horse racing enthusiasts are in for a treat on Friday, the 7th and Sunday, the 9th of May 2010, when New Turf Carriers will be sponsoring a weekend of thoroughbred racing. The Friday race day will take place at Fairview Race Course and the Sunday at Arlington. This is the fourth consecutive year that New Turf Carriers and Phumelela Gaming & Leisure join forces in creating this exciting weekend of racing.



Port Elizabeth’s premier racing event, the R350 000 Grade 3 New Turf Carriers East Cape Derby will again be the showpiece of the weekend at Arlington on the Sunday. This race always attracts some of the country’s most promising three year old horses and the cream of the country’s jockeys and it is hoped that this year will be no different.



The Dahlia Plate over 1200m, with a purse of R125 000 will be run at Fairview on the Friday. The public and racing enthusiasts alike will be able to see some of racing’s top juvenile horses in action, as many visitors from outside of Port Elizabeth are expected. The sponsor of this year’s Dahlia Plate is The South African Gold Coin Exchange. We thank them for their generous donation.



In previous years, New Turf Carriers raised in excess of R100 000 for their chosen charities. This year we expect none less and New Turf Carriers have great pleasure in announcing the beneficiaries for this year: Nazareth House, the Local Horse Care Unit and the Animal Welfare Society. All of these organizations are doing great work and are extremely deserving of any monies they receive.



We do not charge an entrance fee and the general public is very welcome to join us on any of our race days.
All the activities, displays, children entertainment etc are free, there is no cost involved.



This year’s theme for the weekend of racing is “Proudly South African”, we also salute the donkey, with International Day of the donkey. Some of the activities planned around this year’s New Turf Carriers East Cape Derby weekend of racing:



Friday, 7 May – Fairview Race Course

· 9 Race programme commencing at 12:00

* Starting at 09:00, an Educational outing to Fairview Race Course for about 100 primary school learners in the Greenbushes area with free lunch and cold drinks for all
* Donkey Cart rides for children / Dog displays / Kids entertainment, Face Painting, Clowns and more
* HB Christian Room - Charity Wine Auction and entertainment after the last race, also charity auction of all runners in the New Turf Carriers East Cape Derby, to be run on Sunday, 9 May at Arlington



Sunday, 9 May – Arlington Race Course

· 9 Race programme commencing at 12:00.

* Bay FM live broadcast - “Solid Gold Sunday” with Hein Herselman from 09:00 to 12:00 and “Die Burger Opskop” with Jacques Arendt from 12:00 to 15:00
* Bay FM will be celebrating “Mothers day” at Arlington by giving away a two night break to Sandals Guest House (4 star) in St Francis Bay, to be won by one lucky mom. Collect your entry form from the Animal Welfare table next to the Bay FM Caravan on course and deposit in the specially provided box. The winner will be drawn and announced by Jacques Arendt at the end of his show at 15:00.
* Lucky on course draws – 4 x “Nelson Mandela 46664” Silver Bangles up for grabs
* 08:30 – 10:00: Public walking of sheltered dogs on inside of course – small fee – proceeds to Animal Welfare Society
* Donkey Cart Competitions and Displays / Dog Competitions and Displays / Display Soccer Game / Food Stalls
* Animal Welfare Society Stalls / Kids entertainment / Lots of food and liquid refreshment stalls
* Picnic spots for families / Bar facilities / Free “mothers day” choccies to all moms on-course

We are hoping for a lot of runners over the weekend but there are a huge amount of noms including strong entries for The Derby. If all goes well then Eye of the World will be a runner....

Should be nice match race Dave...your money on the 4kg claimer????? give some insight there my man. At least DJ made the final field for the Derby, thanks Mark & Dorrie for sponsorship. Seems after all the postponements of Highveld racing the Laird & De Kock stables opted not to run their entrants which gives the local runners a good chance of winning. Robert The Bruce seems the horse to beat. Good luck to all entrants and hope it pans out to be a great race...

The plan is for CC to go to the front and make every post a winning post and for Slumdog to come out the pack and try and catch her on the line and if possible to try and dead heat. However trainers and jocks never listen so its probable this will not happen.

If any Clan members want to participate in our Derby Sweepstake please give us a call. We auction the runners off on Friday evening with 30% of the pool going to Charity and 70% to winner. Last year Ashley Parker bought Lizards Desire for R700 and won R17 000.......Pretty good return.
