Some good racing in the UK
Chester going 'perfect' for start of May meeting
CHESTER expects little rain for its May meeting, which begins on Wednesday, but does not think the ground will quicken beyond its official description of good.
The Totesport.com Chester Cup is the highlight on day one of the three-day fixture and clerk of the course Ed Gretton is happy with conditions.
He said on Tuesday: "It's perfect, just about spot-on at good after the rain at the back end of last week.
"There is a small chance of showers during the week, but we should miss them. However, it will be overcast and quite cold.
"It shouldn't get too much quicker than good."
BARRY HILLS bids to win the Chester Cup for the fifth time on Wednesday and said on the eve of the £120,000 handicap that "there is a good race to be won" with his top-weight Tastahil.
Tastahil will be ridden by Hills's son Richard, who partnered Daraahem to win for his father 12 months ago, and is 20-1 with race sponsor Totesport. To illustrate the wide-open looking nature of the 17-runner handicap, Ladbrokes made five horses 9-1 co-favourites.
The trainer, who is fighting fit after spending five months of last season in hospital, said of Tastahil: "He pulled himself around a bit in that awful ground at Nottingham on his first run of the season - nothing came to light to explain why he didn't run his race there.
"He was slow coming in his coat due to the cold weather, but he's in very good order now. He stays well and the Chester Cup or Ormonde were always likely next options provided there was some cut in the ground. There's a good race to be won with him."
Vying for market leadership on Tuesday night were Bernie The Bolt, Red Cadeaux, Mamlook, Halla San and Nemo Spirit.
The Chester Cup is the highlight of the opening afternoon of the three-day May meeting, live on Channel 4, with the Weatherbys Bank Cheshire Oaks the main supporting race.
The market for this seven-runner race also looked wide-open on Tuesday night, with Myplacelater, Gertrude Bell and Dance On By all around the 11-4 mark.
Dance On By's trainer Aidan O'Brien has won the last two runnings of the Cheshire Oaks, with Sail and Perfect Truth. He said of this year's challenger: "She's a maiden having her third run and we think she is coming forward all the time. She's in good form and should appreciate the better ground."

Rob, I think he slightly forgot to take conditions leading up to the day and on the day itself into account. But I've been guilty of the same thing more than a few times so stones, glass houses, and all that.
