Media Release - Betting World 1900 Final Field
15 years 3 months ago
Next Friday’s Betting World 1900 has drawn a very interesting mix of runners. The final field for the R350 000 Grade 2 Handicap was announced today (Thursday) and is headed up by last season’s Champions Cup (Gr 1) winner Ivory Trail and Canon Gold Cup (Gr 1) winner Mokaro, who carry joint top weight of 60kg.
This race’s reputation as a pointer to the possible outcome of the Vodacom Durban July has diminished somewhat over the past few seasons with the big race having been dominated by three-year-olds, but with the July having been put back a month the form of this year’s Betting World 1900 could prove far more significant.
The Mike Bass-trained Fort Vogue is many pundits early fancy for the Vodacom Durban July after his big showing when fourth behind stable companion River Jetez in the J&B Met earlier this season as the gelding is likely to come into the Vodacom Durban July with a very handy galloping weight. So his performance here will be watched with particular interest.
Also in the line-up is last season’s Sansui Summer Cup winner Aslan, Noblewood, second to stable companion Mokaro in the Canon Gold Cup and Havasha, recent runner-up to the emphatic KRA Guineas (Gr 2) winner Noordhoek Flyer and one of only two horses to have lowered the colours of Pierre Jourdan.
Trainer Mike de Kock has not yet declared a rider for Havasha but Anthony Delpech has been penciled in behind the name of Bold Silvano. The former darling of the Eastern Cape will be having his first outing for his new stable after finishing five lengths back to Bravura and Noordhoek Flyer in the Investec Cape Derby (Gr 1). Given the stable’s form with recent acquisitions from other yards, Irish Flame and Ancestral Fore spring to mind, then Bold Silvano’s showing will also be of more than just passing interest.
The Betting World 1900 will be run over 1900 m at Greyville Racecourse on Friday evening, May 21.
