Irish Flame and Noordhoek Flyer, two of the highest rated three-year-olds in the country, head up nominations for the R1 million Daily News 2000 to be run over 2000m at Greyville Racecourse on Saturday, June 5.
Both were facile winners of their most recent outings, Irish Flame hacking up in the SA Derby (Gr1) beating Pierre Jourdan by nine lengths, and Noordhoek Flyer equally impressive in the KRA Guineas (Gr2).
Missing from the initial list of entries is Investec Cape Derby (Gr1) winner Bravura. However, trainer Joey Ramsden’s runner is safely ensconced at Clairwood and there is still time for Ramsden to enter his charge with a supplementary stage due on Friday, May 21.
Ramsden issued a statement last Friday saying that Bravura had travelled up to Durban extremely well. He said Bravura’s main objective is still the Vodacom Durban July although his name is not among the first entries for the Daily News 2000 (Gr1).
After winning the Investec Cape Derby (Gr1) Bravura was sent away for a short break.
He came back after two weeks in extremely fine fettle but three weeks into his preparation for the Durban season he suffered a setback which cost him close to three weeks of work, causing Ramsden to re-think his preparation for the KwaZulu-Natal Champions Season.
“It goes without saying that if the Vodacom Durban July had been run in its traditional time slot, Bravura’s Durban campaign would’ve been cancelled. But as it stands at present, to have him fit, well, and ready for this event is entirely feasible with the amount of time on our hands. Obviously any setbacks that occur between now and 31 July 2010 would put his participation in question,” said Ramsden. “We are hoping to get two prep runs in before the July, those as of yet haven’t been finalised. The picture will become clearer in the next six weeks where we will then issue another statement.”
Ramsden said, “I felt the need to issue this current statement due to the Ante-post betting market and the extreme earliness of the current July entry system.”
Entries for the R500 000 Woolavington 2000 (Gr1) sees a very strong entry of 27 fillies but seemingly dominated by runners from the Mike de Kock yard.
Here To Win and Sidera are among the six entries from the yard and are the top rated runners along with the Stuart Pettigrew-trained Spiced Gold.
An interesting omission here is KRA Fillies Guineas (Gr2) winner Gibraltar Blue. De Kock did indicate that he may be reluctant to test his star filly beyond 1600m after her end-to-end Fillies Guineas win, but her name may still appear in the final field with a further supplementary stage due on Friday, 22 May 2010.
