We need to finish in first four to get in the July
15 years 6 days agoOne of the best chances for an upset in Saturday’s Grade 1, R1 million, Daily News 2000 at Greyville Racecourse will come via the smart Mike Miller-trained Jet Master colt Lizarre.
There are no guarantees in racing but Miller's assistant, Janine Newlands, reflected the stable's confidence.
"If he turns for home four or five lengths off them I guarantee he will run in the first three," she said.
She added that Lizarre had finished just over three lengths behind Noordhoek Flyer in the Investec Cape Derby over 2000m despite having been squeezed and unlucky.
Miller himself said, "We haven't seen the best of this horse yet. He doesn't drive through gaps but instead gets into them and then becomes hesitant. I think that once he learns to race we will see more improvement, although he better learn very quickly! He finished a length ahead of Bold Silvano in the Investec Cape Derby having finished just behind him in the Bloodstock SA Cape Guineas, so if you fancy Bold Silvano you have to give Lizarre a chance. Lizarre was only just beginning to get used to the left hand turn in Cape Town. Then he came back here and loved it at Greyville in his last start – it was like being back at home for him. I don't think Noordhoek Flyer is as good over 2000m as he is over a mile. He is a brilliant miler - in my opinion no horse in the country would beat him over a mile. A lot of people reckoned that Noordhoek Flyer was sent for home too soon in the Cape Derby but Bravura is unbeaten in five starts and is obviously a very good horse. Lizarre also beat Irish Flame in the Cape Derby. You have to then wonder how good Pierre Jourdan is – he has been very well placed, but hasn't taken on horses outside of Johannesburg."
Lizarre is well drawn in barrier four with Alec Forbes up and this race is very important for his Vodacom Durban July prospects.
"We will have to finish in the first four to get into the July," said Miller.
