Mott takes Belmont with 13-1 shot Drosselmeyer

Report: USA, Saturday

Belmont Park: Belmont Stakes (Grade 1) 1m4f, dirt, 3yo

DROSSELMEYER (Bill Mott/Mike Smith) was the 13-1 winner of Saturday's Belmont Stakes, holding on from the fast-finishing Fly Down to take the final leg of the Triple Crown.

Remarkably, the victory gave his Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, forever associated with the great Cigar, his first-ever win in a Triple Crown race.

On the other hand, owners WinStar Farm were celebrating their second victory this year in a Triple Crown race after Super Saver's Kentucky Derby win.

Kentucky runner-up Ice Box, sent off a strong favourite for the $1 millionevent, never landed a blow before coming sixth.

He was unsuited by the moderate pace up front set by Preakness Stakes runner-up First Dude as jockey Ramon Dominguez attempted to conserve his mount's stamina.

First Dude gave way only at the furlong marker as Drosselmeyer challenged three wide under Mike Smith, who was replacing Kent Desormeaux on the son of Distorted Humor, beaten six lengths on his previous start by Fly Down in the Grade 2 Dwyer Stakes, the designated trial for the Belmont.

Fly Down, a Nick Zito-trained stablemate of Ice Box, charged down the outside in the closing stages but the line came in time for Drosselmeyer, at last living up to his lofty reputation having never before scored in graded-stakes company.

He stopped the clock at 2m31.57s for the 1m4f on dirt.

Both the runner-up and third-placed First Dude were sent off at about the 5-1 mark.
