McCoy 'honoured'
to be made an OBE
TONY McCOY says it is "a great honour" to be made an OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.
The award comes two months after the 15-times champion jump jockey achieved a long-held ambition when he finally won the John Smith's Grand National at the 15th time of asking on board Don't Push It.
He said: "It's a great honour for me. Things like this are always nice and it's a bit different from some of my other achievements."
Having beaten Sir Gordon Richards' record of 269 winners in a season in April 2002, with a total of 289, McCoy went on to become the winningmost jump jockey when he passed Richard Dunwoody's record of 1,699 in the August of that year. He rode his 3,000th winner early last year.
McCoy, who was made an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours in 2003, joins former great jockeys Pat Eddery and John Francome in being appointed an OBE.
He added: "Stepping up in anything means you're improving and that's always nice.
"My goal every year is to be champion jockey. If I work hard enough it's something I've got control over, whereas these sort of things are just nice accolades.
"It means that people from the outside world appreciate you're doing well. It's nice to get recognition from the Queen."
Martin Pipe, who provided McCoy with a string of big-race wins and the ammunition that contributed to eight of the rider's champion titles between 1996 and 2004, when he rode as stable jockey to the 15-times champion trainer, was delighted by McCoy's latest achievement.
"AP is such a great ambassador for racing and he thoroughly deserves it. It is great for racing," Pipe said.
"He is a great jockey and it is great that he has been honoured in his Grand National-winning year."

If the Queen Mum was still around she'd have made him Prime Minister. She did love her National Hunt racing.
