Hear The Drums record winning bid washed out
South Africa: Persistent rain has washed out Hear The Drums' bid to set a new South African record for races won at Fairview on Thursday.
The meeting, also featuring the country's longest race, the 2m2f Port Elizabeth Gold Cup, was called off after an inspection on Wednesday afternoon.
There have been suggestions that the feature races, including Hear The Drums' Pinnacle Stakes race, could be transferred to the Arlington meeting on June 24.
But racecourse manager Luciano Passerini said: "I don't know about that. Today is a public holiday and I haven't yet been able to speak to the authorities."
Hear The Drums, trained by Des McLachlan, equalled the 32-win record set by Screech Owl nearly 50 years ago when winning a Listed race at Fairview in March.
The seven-year-old was due to have a new rider, with Felix Coetzee taking over from Andrew Fortune, as the champion jockey has taken a sabbatical in a bid to sort out his ongoing weight problems.
Coetzee is no stranger to record-breaking runs as he partnered Hong Kong legend Silent Witness to victory in all the horse's first 17 starts.
