Horse of the Day - ARKLE 🇮🇪

Arkle was a class apart, he won 27 of his 35 starts, including 22 wins from 26 steeplechases, and he was placed in the other 4 races with mitigating circumstances for each defeat.

Was he the Greatest Steeplechaser ever? 🤔

🏆🏆🏆- Cheltenham Gold Cups (1964, 1965, 1966)
🏆🏆- Hennessy Gold Cups (1964 and 1965)
🏆- King George VI Chase (1965)
🏆- Irish Grand National (1964)
🏆- Gallaher Gold Cup (1965)
🏆- Whitbread Gold Cup (1965)

He carried more than 12th in weight in 14 of his races and won at distances from 1m 6f on the Flat up to 3m 5f over fences.

His superiority was such that handicapping procedures had to be altered to accommodate his dominance. Arkle was so good that he caused the rules to be changed - how many participants in any sport can claim that? But he was much more than a sensationally good racehorse. In an age when television coverage was rapidly increasing the popularity of steeple chasing , Arkle was the first horse who truly became a public figure, an equine god who took his place alongside the Beatles, Jackie Kennedy and El Cordobes in popularity polls.

Arkle was a legendary racehorse known primarily as a steeplechase and National Hunt specialist. Arkle was one of the most celebrated and dominant racehorses in the history of jump racing. He competed during the 1960s and achieved remarkable success, becoming a household name in the horse racing world.

Arkle was born in Ireland in 1957 and was trained by Tom Dreaper. He gained recognition for his exceptional jumping ability, speed, and power. Arkle's most notable achievements include winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup three consecutive times from 1964 to 1966. He also won the Irish Grand National in 1964, carrying a record weight of 12 stone 7 pounds (79 kilograms).

Arkle's dominance was evident in his performances against other top-class horses. He set numerous records and won many races by significant margins. His success earned him a massive fan following and established his status as a true racing legend.

Unfortunately, Arkle's career was cut short due to injury. A fracture sustained during a race in 1965 led to his retirement the following year. Despite his relatively short career, Arkle's impact on the sport was immense. He left an indelible mark on the history of horse racing and remains one of the most celebrated and revered steeplechasers of all time.
