Kenilworth Vs Turffontein ???
14 years 6 months ago
I'.ve heard various prominent people in racing stating that the turffontein mile is the stiffest in the country .
Can somebody explain to me how these people get to this conclusion . I see it exactly the opposite .Kenilworth imo is by far a stiffer mile .
Why ?
Pretty simple to me just compare the running times of races run at both centres throughout the year and you will see that the times at turffontein are much faster than kenilworth .
1+1 =2
or am i missing something ?

The Cape Crawl might have something to do with it

At Turffies there is an uphill around the bend - I think the Cape Crawl is definitely a factor - have you compared the times over 2000?

For me it is a combination of things that affect the times, most notably the following:
1) Cape Crawl
2) The going
3) The blustery wind conditions in the Cape.
The Turffontein mile is the hardest stamina test due to the uphill climb coming around the home turn.
I'm not sure the times have much to do with it as there are too many other factors?

All of the times at turffies are faster !
1) they can't crawl in every race !
2) the going - thats why i compared it through the whole year
3) the wind conditions -- well this contributes to the toughness

Ant, I think when they call it the toughest they simply mean the racing surface and its undulations. The other factors I mentioned is simply to give you an idea why the times may be slower in the Cape?
As far as the physical racing surface is concerned, I believe Turffies is tougher, butt actual racing conditions may be more testing in the Cape due to the above mentioned factors?
I'm not sure the one has anything to do with the other, but I could be wrong?

Tommy ,taking all the factors into consideration , the cape seems tougher to me .
If they ran the races in equal conditions it could be a different story .
What's that saying " die Kaap is Holandse"

I agree with you that if you take all the factors into consideration then racing in the Cape is probably a little tougher, but I guess you cannot try and factor in the imponderables and then try to make a call about the toughness of a surface?
This is the only explanation I can offer

Imo, the times do not necesarily prove that Kenilworth is 'tougher'; imo one also need to take into account the 'altitude' factor and it is generally believed that the Kenilworth 2000 is the easiest in the country - I think Wolf Power never really got 2000, but he won the Met. This is one of the reasons why I believe that Mother Russia will win the Met this year.(tu)
Anyway it is an interesting debate:)
