Racing Post
Dancewiththedevil out to thwart De Kock team
Turffontein: L.Jaffee Empress Club Stakes (Grade 1) 1m, turf, 3yo+ f/m
DANCEWITHTHEDEVIL (St John Gray/ S'Manga Khumalo) is ante-post favourite to thwart Mike de Kock's five-strong assault on a race he has won three times in the past five seasons.
The market leader ran out an impressive five-and-a-half length winner of the Horse Chestnut Stakes in the soft over this course and distance last time and now has only her own sex to contend with.
Gray said: "A lot of doubters are saying that was because of the going and as a result the others didn't perform. But I'm letting the horse do the talking and I'm hoping for a great run."
British-bred Welwitschia (Mike de Kock/Anthony Delpech) is the only three-year-old in the field and is the main danger according to the market. She has been backed from 3-1 to 22-10 with Betting World.
De Kock said: "She is inexperienced but she is well above average and she gets a Northern Hemisphere allowance which helps."
Flirtation (De Kock/Anton Marcus)beat last year's Empress Club winner Mother Russia in the Summer Cup in November but has not raced since the J & B Met at the end of January.
De Kock said: "She spent a month in a paddock after that so I would expect her to come back needing this.
"Alderry (Gunter Wrogemann) has a 9lb swing with Fisani (Gavin Lerena) compared with last time's Jacaranda Handicap. She is working well and I would expect her to be all over Fisani this time although Fisani has improved quite a bit.
"Headstrong (Michael Odendaal) has a bit to find but she is close to being retired to stud and we want to get asmuch black type as we can."

Dancewiththedevil set to lock horns with Goat would have been a much better title for that piece.

Seriously, the very soft going in the Horse Chestnut must have had an effect on the way some of the horses performed (Kavanagh especially?), but Dancewiththedevil is improving fast. However, on good going I think Goat will make more of a race of it and if you go back to their penultimate meeting Laff's filly can beat the favourite on these weight terms.
Pero Valiente has all the form to win the last even coming off a lay-off, although it is his first start as a gelding and some horses go backwards after the snip. I like Solarium to win the first, while Surfing Safari ran well at Greyville last time and could go very close back at Turffies with its long run-in.

Morning Magic, its probably dangerous to take "hype" over form but what do u think of the chances of Welwitschia?
With the inputs I have, I would like to have a decent bet at around 3/1
ps hope Goat runs well for the connections.

I think this sort of test could come too soon for Welwitschia, but with De Kock who knows? He can produce miracles. I still think the Devil is the horse to beat, but I would take the form of her last win with a pinch of salt until she shows the same level of ability on decent ground, which she should get tonight unless the weatherman has completely screwed up his predictions.

Yeah, the Free Ladies thing does sound quite attractive.
< They could have worded it a bit better, methinks. And Laff and his gang are going to be there so the Free Ladies could be in for a busy evening. (God help them if Goat happens to win.....
)
