Why are we not seeing horses breaking Course records any longer???
14 years 1 month ago
I've done a check on the course records at the various Gold Circle courses and it is amazing to see that the last course record to have fallen was in 2006 at Greyville and before that was in 2004 at Kenilworth but one has to go back a fairly lengthy period to see any significant change at any of the courses.Itseems that in the 1990's records fell fairly regularly.Have the timing devices chaged significantly...is the course distances being measure more effectively etc. because I cannot believe that in the 90's we had significantly better horses than now.
I have factored in the change in the topweights that is now lumped on horses and that is a factor but this did not happen until fairly recently...also I have not checked the Phumelela race courses and would appreciate input from another clan member however here is the Tabgold info per course where the last records have fallen:
Scottsville 800 Hail the Act 15/12/1999 57.0 46.20
Kenilworth 2200 Kura Star 30/04/2003 60.0 134.1
Greyville 2400 Wall Street 23/07/2006 51.5 142.47
Durbanville 1600 Great Assembly 30/03/2002 54.5 96.3
Clairwood 1400 Greenbelt 30/09/2001 50.0 82.06

I think he's going to have to go some because that record was set by a really good 1400m specialist called Eldoriza...really hard to beat over the distance and wrecked many a reputation
1400 Eldoriza 19/02/1994 50.0 81.50
1400 Eldoriza 19/02/1994 50.0 81.50

The vets charge too much for the dope - lol; seriously perhaps we have reached the limit, another explanation could be in mnay instances times are not being recorded accurately? Are the dogs running any faster?

Perhaps the racing authorities don't update the course records so accurately anymore. Wishful Eye broke 1000m Clairwood record on the 8th of February,
