Is the July ante post betting a scam?
13 years 11 months ago
This letter is being prepared for publication in the Sporting Post
Good day,
Kindly advise who I can direct this letter to so that it may be published in the sporting post.I am an avid sport follower and will occassionally dabble my luck at the casinos, however as a layman (there are many of us out there), I think that it is necessary to highlight the problem I have experienced.
I took a quadruple bet where the first 3 selections won. Alas the 4th selection was for a July "runner"Dance with the devil which has now been "eliminated / scratched".
I was not aware that if the July selection is "eliminated / scratched" that the entire bet becomes a losing ticket because generally if 1 selection is "removed"then the odds are reduced and the ticket is paid out accordingly.
I have taken up the matter (ticket 813407) with Van der Vyver bookmakers and they say that even the Bookmakers control committee will not hear the case unless I pay R500 and then they will schedule an arbitration meeting. Interestingly the ticket outlay was a mere R70 to win R5700 and the reduced odds are about R900, so paying R500 to "hear a verict ... well these are the rules and ordinances" seems foolish.
I recently learnt that there is another term of "with a run" which means that my bet did not stand a winning chance since the horse Dance with the devil will not partake in the Durban July and my 3 winning selections amounts to zero. This is not good news for Van der Wyver bookmakers in maintaining patronage and
does not bode well for the racing industry.
I have not received a response from Dave van der Vyver and think that only "advising" the public about ante post betting will help.
Regards

i have said it for a long time, betting tickets especially from bookmakers need to have basic rules and regulations on the back of them...majority of punters do not know the rules with regards to betting...the farce the other night at greyville with the lights meaning all bookie bets null and void ,the postponement of meetings ,how many legs of an exotic have to be run before the bet pays out a dividend etc etc etc etc..can u imagine how many tickets have been thrown away meanwjhile the punter is entitled to a refund...the authoritys have failed badly in this regard...if van der vyver had marketing sense he would pay out on the first 3 legs

Dave van der Vyver - use common sense and pay the punter for the first 3 selections that won. Keep your customers happy,
hence he will be back to support you. Why loss a customer to another bookie.

Hibs,your comment " Ante-post rules are clear"......to who?
Does the ticket convey the rules?
Are customers warned, when taking bets of this nature,of the conditions?
Question: are the rules for Quadruples the same as for ATC bets? With ATC rhe stake builds up and is lost on the last bet,but checking the rules of on-line sites it is as clear as mud....why is the quad not just a treble?

Rob would you have expected to be paid?
you must have done your money many times betting antepost? i certainly have
I feel for Mervyn but if an antepost runner is scratched it`s a loser

Hibs, you know this fact to be true.....Rob knows, I know and probably about 75% of the posters here know, but what about the 25%....that's what Rob and Pirates are getting at. We know the rules but what about the guys who don't know the rules and do their money in cold blood like Marvs did. THAT remains the mystifying question........
Racing cannot afford to lose even 2.5% let alone 25% of it customer base due to bad marketing and advertising. Just common sense really!

In his mind it was a scam but you are right....taking the word for its meaning it should not have been used!
