Drakenstein Stud have announced the sponsorship of a Juvenile Sprint which will form part of the programme of the 151st renewal of the L’Ormarins Queen's Plate at Kenilworth on the 7th January 2012. This R100 000 race will be named the Trippi Juvenile Sprint in honour of Drakenstein Stud Farm's popular resident sire and is a mixed event for 2yo's over 1000m.

Gauteng racing has 4 Maiden Juvenile Plate Races for both sexes, from 4th December to 7th February, only one race apiece in January, that makes 4 winners apiece. Then a Juvenile Plate and a Juvenile Fillies Plate race on the 14th Feb... max 4 winners for the fillies race by that stage, race will not stand up if no maiden Juveniles or raiding runners are not entred.
Making the point that there should be more Maiden Juvenile races on in January.

Then after the Juvenile race 1 more Maiden Juvenile race for each sex 25th Feb for C&G's and 28th Feb for Fillies before the 2 YO Storm Bird and Ruffian Stakes (F)
on 3 March!!!.
So we can have only a maximum of 6 local fillies 1x winners for the Ruffian Stakes if all are entred...:S

Anyone know how many 2yo winner in SA this season?
I will run this by Phumelela

Nice that you got rid of that writer's block, Power.

Maybe not enough races - but I think the real problem is that there are not enough babies ready to run in these races - let's see how many noms there are in Jan. Also I think a good idea to go into the Ruffian as a maiden - they get weight from the non-maidens and those 3 kg's make a difference with babies imo

bwahaaaaaaa frodo,

there are only 2 races one for fillies early in Jan and one for colts late in Jan....

nice point about been a maiden, but if you are a maiden who going into the storm bird or ruffian you would have had to be placed 2nd or 3rd to get in over an unraced horse, .... waiting to run as a unraced maiden is a bit chancy to getting in.

Agra looks special but watch the Trippi sprint.... something else is special.

I know times change, but it wasn't all that long ago that the Joburg baby races would start at Newmarket (sigh) in early November and there never seemed to be a shortage of early types to fill races. Is it not a vicious circle, perhaps, in that fewer horses are readied early because there are fewer races for them these days?

I agree with magic - this seems to be a 'vicious' circle - how to fix it I don't really know, but I would suggest rather havet the races available in the program and replace them at nomination time should there not be enough noms - that way at least there is some incentive for the trainers to get the early types ready.

About the Ruffian, I don't believe there will be a big nom - so it's up to you Power - give the filly a run or not, but be sure to come into the race as a maiden - huge advantage imo

Just for interest how many of these 2 year olds, (mainly the ones that win/place in the 2 year old features) train on to be good 4 and 5 year olds??
