You have obviously not heard of the earlier Potala Palace - "MR HAWAII" - this champ "talked" twice as fast as he could run -

MR HAWAII was a talking horse that cost big bucks as a yearling - was hyped up and turned out to be a huge dud - same yard about 1987 i think - best run was a fourth in the nursery i think

Yes, Martin Locke was the syndicate nominee. I think he went for 550k as a yearling.I remember he made the 8pm SABC news the day he won his maiden first time out. I was only 14 at the time and already a veteran !

I wouldn't dismiss Potala Palace until he goes 2000m.
As for Mr Hawaii, I remember Basil Marcus riding him at least once and telling me that he felt like a really good horse. The ability was probably there, but for whatever reason (and it happens often enough) it never came to the surface. That's the game, but it takes every kind of character to make life interesting and you can't fault Mike Azzie for being passionate. He's willing to take the risk that he will end up with egg on his face, but you need people who see the glass as half full just as you have to have those who prefer to see it as half empty.

i was at Varsity and skipped out at lectures to back him at the old JHB tats in the CBD when he won on debut- I've said this before and will say it again - this horse taught me a very important lessons about racing - Never listen to trainers/owners/jockeys unless you see the proof with your own eyes - A horse does not know his sales price - A bookmaker that takes your money with a smile on the Fav knows more than you do so look again if you can(Len Smart took my bet when I backed Azzie's horse for the Nursery) - Overpaying for horses at sales proves you have more money than sense

Georgie the Greek and myself bought a wee filly at the same time as the Hawaii syndicate named Breathless for 2 grand and in the same style as the syndicate took a luxury bus from Pretoria to the big T full of family and friends when she won her maiden, potentially the best day of my life? When we woke up on the Sunday morning got the Sunday times to find a full page article from Francois Wolfhart " a Scot gets lucky" does not get any better
