I have been meaning to ask as how the juvenile season pattern has changed over the years.Correct me if im wrong,Gauteng always used to have races earlier but now coming late.My questions are. ..why does it seem that theres no value for racing two year olds(3grade ones only)It must be difficult for owners.share your thoughts

You not wrong. 2yo racing used to be a busy business, but it's really quietened down as the years go by.

My theory is that as the traditional 2yo yards (which used to include many smaller yards with cheaper stock) have diminished, so the demand for early races has declined.

Even though horses are relatively much cheaper now, the real expense which is the monthly bill, has changed the profile of owners and trainers and I think chasing the quick buck has proven increasingly expensive. Although so is everything else. 2yo racing starts in Nov, and 4 months later we have about 50 winners, so that's 3 per month per province?

But it takes a certain type of trainer to get busy with 2yos, and collectively they have fizzled out, one way or another.

gives trainers longer to tell you your slow horse at 2 is now slower at 3 (i speak from experience)

I have won the Ruffian Stakes 2 years running. Both have trained on. This year I go for a hat trick. But, no runner...... WHY?

I dont know, for sure, but here are some points -

1)Later rains last two years in Gauteng, results in firm going staying for longer, through Spring, to mid Summer. Grass is green on top, but very firm underfoot until soaking rains of January. Also, with less courses, the Turf takes a pounding and longer to knit after Spring treats. Trainers are careful of this.
2)Surplus of horses in Training, no empty stables, so ''babies''come in later. Just consider the following -
2.1 All Training centres in SA are full right now.
2.2 One very large contributor to this situation is the ''half stakes, low MR''meetings held once monthly at
Vaal, which allow, for instance a MR47 filly to get in ahead of a MR63 filly. This stops horses moving on, thus keeping stables full in Gauteng.
3)Gauteng has no grade 1 race for juveniles anymore. Both Nursery races are GRADE 2 now and first Grade 1 for Juveniles is at Scottsville, May. So, no need to rush Juveniles up here.

The following might make you THINK.....

350 Yearlings sold at Cape Premier book 1, another 420 at book 2 this weekend. 50 2yo horses sold off Mick Goss's farm last wed. That's more than 800 horses to come in this year, so far, yet the only dispersal sale, on thurs last week ''cleared'' 200 stables. You do the maths and then add in the upcoming National One Sale, the KZN Breeders Sale, National 2 and then Ready to Run, to round off the year.

BUY WISELY, it's YOUR MARKET, a BUYER's Market !

I remember we had the bloodline million and the trainers/ owners were keen to get the babies going early, Robert Maroun was a trainer that used to get his babies going early "Creator" comes to mind.

tom and jerry etc - his babies had run more times by 2 than most other yards had done by 3 - Zaki (martin) also used to race babies early

I also think that winning with a juvie gets him nailed with a high MR which takes yonks to come down.
