u probably got me wrong...and u will be on the receiving end each time if u think that ownership is about making money.....this is an absolute hobby...so what i suggested was that we could get the same thrill and elation of the sport of owning with a R1000/m..and get 5%...or if we spentR50 000 /m and had a 100% of the horse....my response was to the topic of what is the best way of owning horses....not the other aspect of the viability of owning horses

Yet to see any potential cracker ever put up for syndication in this market... had there been one I would have been in......any horse worth it's salt is soon snapped up by the deep pockets... as that guarantees many a future meal ticket

i am not sure what the initial arrangements were in respect of the pj contract....but 1 thing for sure i would imagine that this ugly duckling and its owners never invisaged at the time that this horse could soar to this great heights....and i am pretty sure the dispute arose because 1 partner wanted an overseas campaign with this horse and the trainer didnt want to let the horse go(llok this is just my speculation)...could be way off the mark.....

Zietsman - your passion and desire is obvious and probably is the foundation requirement when entering into racehorse ownership - amazing highs are married to devestating lows.
While definitely not being an expert, from my experience of racehorse ownership, the best advice I could forward is to:
* determine and stick to affordable budget (money you can lose and dont need);
* buy the best horses you can afford (not neccasarily most expensive). Get the best advice possible from best proffesionals (second opinion or other than trainer if possible). Go with your gut instinct if you like a horse to purchase that has no patent defects;
* Partnerships only with people with simmilar goals and attitude (syndicates can be fun but have a few of your own/partnership as well - they compliment each other and spread the risk);
* Get best stable/trainer/jockey package possible;
* Be aware of, budget for, and be hard on the "soft add-on issues" we all forget - check and manage Vet, Farrier, Miscallaneous accounts;
* Remain involved in all the details - visit as often as possible, listen to the talk, ask questions, check answers, ask advice, offer solutions, push for results but understand the complexities;
* Involve your family (prevent the "racing widow" syndrome) - hard enough to deal with this game without home support;
* Set disciplined "stop/loss" criteria - "no show they go" irrespective of "outside advice" - hardest part;
* If its not fun - run.
My whole family has experienced the crazy racing roller-coaster of the stratospheric highs of owning a champion through to the devestating blow of losing him, from good ones to useless ones - yet they have all been ours, and we would never change a day.
Wishing you well in your decision, and hopefully this will help you.

We have experienced all forms of the game from breeding, owning and now training. While the lows, like loosing are a horse, are devasting the highs are amazing.
Nothing can touch having your first winner until you breed, own and train a winner.
