" The Ringer that wasn't Robert "

For the benefit of the younger clansmen, any of the " elder " members can recall the Ringer incident that took place at the Vaal racecourse many years ago, in the eighties or early nineties perhaps? All I can recall was that it was an ex Durban horse named KIEV which was trained by Uncle Joe Joseph [R.I.P.] and relocated to TVL. Some name like Van Baalen comes to mind however in Natal Tatts this runner shortened dramatically and won from start to finish. Something about the horse having it's hooves painted white?

I have heard this one in the tote - apparently the paint ran off one of its legs after the race!

Can't remenber all the details but remember the incident well. It was a small crappy stable with one reasonably good horse.............they backed a battling maiden for bombs and my bookmaker was in trouble with it ..I was asked my opinion and my statement was "if this wins I'll give up racing".
It did,but the switch was revealed in a matter of days.........so I'm still racing.........lol

(reading the other thread ,they say it wasn't a maiden .............I won't argue, but I do remember I was in Kempton Park Tattersalls)

I was on the course that day the trainer was Faan Fourie and the owner Mr van Baalen who was a head master of a school in Springs.
they had a sprinter that was a A division horse which they then entered into a maiden plate and changed the markings to be the same as a the "maiden"
if i am not mistaken the A div horse was called Have a Deal or something like that, one of the distinct markings of the A div horse was that it had 4 white socks so they had to apply paint to the legs to cover it up.

As far as I know the fraud was discovered only later as a disgruntled employee, that claimed he was not paid his share, exposed them, but i could be wrong but it is a fact it was not discovered on the day of the race and the paint did not came off as was claimed. they took their money and run, those days there were still a lot of book makers on the course and they cleaned them out backed the horse form 33/1 to around 16/10/ 15/10. I started climbing in at 16/1 walked away with quite a bit. .

The " winner" was the appropriately named HAVE A DEAL!
