"A young athlete that recently tested positive for Tik will not be going to the Olympics & is banned for two years, jockeys get 1-3 months for Cocaine"

Please note that my example was EXAGGERATTED!

My point being that if we declare a substance it works in our favour as we are not hiding anything...

There are no excuses for recreational drugs but we are not pharmicists either so each case needs to be looked at fairly when it comes to medicine containing substances over the allowed thresholds... Just like the horses we ride.

Chippy, have a look at my first post, "the system is a joke", i.e. there is no proper system, guidence, list or proper advice for jockeys. I think people jump to too many conclusions based on the current testing system which is flawed. I was also exaggerating(no need for caps lock) to make the point that the system is flawed......

Cough mixture with codiene gives one a good buzz.....but these days Scotch is much cheaper and certainly does the trick too....;)

Benilyn R79/250ml vs a nip of your better branded blend....:S

It does not enhance performance in its commercial form in low schedule products Oscar.

Currently the Medical Control Council are looking to move the scheduling status of Codeine up so that it is not available in S2 products, similar to the ephadrine case a few years ago. What a pity.......back to the Whiskey for me....

Yeah know all about that..the only reason Myprodol is S3 is that AI wanted it there so medical aids would pay..however one point to make is that codeine even at this low dose of 8mg is not available in most countries in the world..in USA if you arrive with a codeine containing product without a Rx you can theoretically be arrested.

Can it not cause drowsiness? Or slow reactions down? So it could have a negative effect on his performance(Many S2 drugs make me drowsy)

Guys I used to take myprodol on race days to take away mild pain in my lower back reason you did not need any pain to distract yor mind from your riding the rule then came in about codeine I then went to the pharmacy to get same tablet without codeine it is sad that a lot of jockeys don't know the rules I feal he was one of them give him a break

We are all speculating a bit. We don't really know what level of codeine was found in his blood.

The other point and I think Mr H makes it, I don't thnk that Codeine is banned as an enhancing substance, I think its banned because it leads to drowsiness and impaired mental and physical function. Much in the same way as alcohol or canibas would be.

We would not want a pissed or even slightly pissed jockey on a horse for safety reasons. The same obviously applies to codiene. 10 beers or 1 beer, 1 Adco Sinal Co (Cheap sinal flu meds) or 3 Myprodol's makes no difference - The line has to be clearly drawn.
