Govt spent R4.6bn on food, entertainment
12 years 7 months ago
Johannesburg - The government spent R4.67bn on catering, entertainment and travel allowances in 2011, Beeld reported on Tuesday.
The figures emerged from government departments' financial results tabled in Parliament over the past few weeks, the newspaper reported.
In the financial year ending on March 31 2012, the 34 state departments incurred the following costs:
- R194m for catering
- R31.7m for entertainment
- R4.4bn for travel and accommodation expenses.
Dion George, DA MP, said expenditure of this kind while the country bled economically was a disgrace, and that it was totally unacceptable to spend such a large sum of money on frivolities.
The three departments responsible for the most spending on entertainment, food and travel expenses were defence (R780m), the police (R685m) and justice (R454m).
The department of defence's travel and accommodation expenses amounted to R733m.
"The DA will send a formal request to the minister of finance to issue a statement in which government departments are asked to stop spending money on luxuries," George said.
"Wasting money in this manner amounts to negligence, during times in which poor South Africans are struggling to put food on the table."

I'm sure the ANC will come out and blame apartheid on this as well...

They still look hungry.
Their cars are not 2012 models and there are not enough 6 star hotels for them.
I feel sorry for them.

If you get the chance to invoice your local council for 100 x computer technicians @ R150 per hour and only need to deliver 90 of them would you turn this business down?
THEY ALL CORRUPT!!!

At least if they make a effort to help clean up the mess and still steal whilst doing so it would make one feel better.

'THEY ALL CORRUPT!!!
Cameron
Zuma
Obama...
Truism!
Virtually every US senator is a multi-millionaire with shares in the banking, property, munitions, oil, gas, IT, media, etc sectors.
Just look at Romney! And Cheyney before him!
They only vote as per their interests... their agendas and decisions devolve around protecting their assets/investments.
Our chaps are into chicken feed!!!

i respect gregs views, infact my father has similar views and is the most moral human i have ever met. Hates americans and therefore has not had a product manufactured by the coca cola company for 80 years. What i say to my father and ill say it to greg is the following.
"you better off being in bed with these guys, you better off invoicing for those extra technicians and then OFF YOUR OWN profits do some good with it. This is better than not being in the "circle of trust" and therefore not in a position to even make 1% of a change. One (or many ) shouting conspiracy from the rooftops helps no one."
Lets look at Mr Gates, for sure to reach the lofty heights is was at he had to break a few rules along the way BUT the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation do a LOT of good now.
I say take/ pay the bribe, and help those around you that need it from those proceeds, this is better than taking the moral high ground and the next guy just keeps it all for himself or buys 3000 racehorses.
