how destructive are bookies and the open bet
12 years 7 months ago
Yesterday i sat at a bookie outlet that also had a tote agency in house, almost all the punters played their exotics and race by race swingers, trif, quartets etc with the bookies while the tote was almost invisible to them.Punters seem to believe that by playing tote bets like places, swingers, exacta, trif etc they get a higher payout because bookies dnt take back on the tote which will reduce the payouts.
The other perception i,d like clanners opinion on is
If we had no bookmakers will racing have a cleaner image?

The punters at this outlet are not your"heartbeat of racing" punters who,s job it is to fill the pools, these are your bigger than average players

Difficult to answer in a few lines but IMO the open bet does damage horseracing, so the question is why do punters use it?
My reply would be because the punter gets a better service from a bookie and basically gets ignored by the operators.
I do not go anywhere to punt except of line and we have limited choices in Pretoria but I have visited the old shop of Prinsloo in water glen and it was taken over by the tote and is a dive with no facilities for the clients, then after about a year the bookie arrived Betting World and its still a shit hole due to being run by the operator. When I say no facilities not even a cold drink or a packet of chips.
You have seen my photos and visits to Hollywood, Fouries etc and they have fully licensed, super food outlets for the comfort of the punters.

Exotics with the tote
everything else with the bookies...
There has been bookies long before there were totes
I have never had a tote bet in my life and never will, fuck the tote

Good morning Bob u sound in a good mood. Lol
Just to reply to another point made on above threads, I am sure even with an exotic if a BIG punter wants to play and is confident his bet will arrive ( don't we all) that he would rather have the bet "sat on" rather than increase the number of winning tickets, as we are also aware that a tote can be manipulated as its only a machine.

Your question is loaded. Words you use are destructive, invisible and when you ask cleaner, you imply dirty.
But when the money comes, it comes at the bookmakers, not from the bookmakers. And which gambler do you know plays 10x bigger than normal, or 20x, or 50x without some assurance ? Without some plan? And without agents to get on?
IMHO, cleanliness isn't defined by the criminal, but by the policeman. It's for racing to guard its image as they do in HK. In HK, jocks have been sent to jail, in UK and Aus jocks get banned, even in Mauritius jocks get bounced off the island, then come back here even if just for appearances.
Rumours in Ct regarding racing fixing is now SO bad, in fact its common knowledge so I am amazed it isn't in the general press. Of course, we don't drug..we medicate, and our jocks "tip" transparently... rather than fix for a share. Your question, with respect, is naive.

Bookies are not that stupid to stand an exotic or place bet....this weekend I saw a bookie laying off on the tote.....a large place bet.... his R5K bet ensured that he was not too exposed to a tote payout of more than R2.20 a drum.....

Punters will always want the option of a fixed price product once they are used to it................bolting on a fixed price tote to Saftote may well dissipate the demand for bookmakers in the traditional sense, and be a leverage for Saftote against the bookmakers IMO.
We don't need Betfair as such, but a joint venture would probably the best entry level for Saftote, due to their advanced systems.........................(imagine trying to use Tab-online for trading.................lol)
