if bookmakers are banned Racing will be gone in a year - The service is shocking in totes - Had occasion to go into the Benoni tote today and after about getting assurances about 4 years ago from someone at Phumelela(I actually took then to the tote) I still see that there were ZERO ZIP tote tickets except for..... Soccer !!! Disgusting - Walk into Hollywood Boksburg and you see the difference(Or Keith Ho Benoni)

It goes without saying the tote service needs to be improved. That is a function of Phumulelas bad management and possible shortage of funding.
For me it is clear, if there were no bookies there would be bigger pools. Bigger pools mean more prize money, more prize money means ownership is more affordable, which means more money for trainers, jockeys and all the industry players. It would also mean better facilities and service for punters.
The fact that bookies were there before the tote has nothing to do with the optimal solution for racing. I know there are many people who rely on bookies for their income but I cannot see how having them adds to the overall benefit of racing. Sure the punter might get better odds but the cons far outweigh the pros for the sport as a whole.

In theory...the fact is that without competition, the one with the monopoly (Eskom, Sasol etc) exploits....unfortunately.

@ Gregbucks
The Meydan dividends on Saftote and the Uk tote are identical, so it seems that commingling took place and the result of UK punters placing bets to the rate of .08p to the rand diluted the payouts???

You must be joking mate, the Tote take 25% off all bets before a race is run, there recent places have shrunk to an average of almost one seventh of the win price of any Horse.
Whoever is in charge of running the Tote, should be hunted as we still see horses shortening 2 to 3 minutes after a race has RUN.
When a Horse pays R1-00 for a place, why are losing bets not refunded as it cannot be classed as a bet when a Punter has no chance of winning

Would rather take the odds I want than play a payout lottery.
