Gazza i'm with on that, backed a horse paying 2.50 a place just 1 min before off, race starts showing same odds and ends paying 1.10 a place pissed off i was:?

I also noticed, after a horse has won, its odds change more drastically after the close then most others

I'm trying to point out an anomaly not siding with them - The horse was really a hot fav yet no one backed the places? It is these anomalies that give the bookmakers credence as tote payouts are a lottery (either too high or too low) and the books give you a price confirmed

Show being the horse runs eiether 1st or 2nd
And place being 1st,2nd and 3rd

The seperate pool should offer better value?

I think we have to remember that the tote is only a machine and only calculates what it's fed, the take out has a massive effect, in addition the people that feed it are in fact the ones that can manipulate the final payouts, not necessarily in a corrupt way.
If we all see tote "value" and rush to play, the value has gone, only with a fixed price operator the "value" can be fixed or frozen.
If you like surprises the tote is the way to go, if you like to know what you will be paid for your outlay use the fixed odds
