South African police ....(td)

BRUTAL police officers in South Africa allegedly beat a taxi driver to death after he parked on the wrong side of the road.

The cabbie, named locally as Mido Macia, was handcuffed to the back of a police van and dragged over 400 metres along a road.

Cops were unable to explain how 27-year-old Mr Macia, a Mozambican immigrant, died when he was found dead in his cell two hours later.

The arrest was filmed on a mobile phone as dozens of onlookers watched in horror.

Can never condone violence, worse of all brutality!

However, what is intriguing about us Safffies:

1. We moan about the influx of foreigners.... and the rackets & crime they are often accused of;

2. We curse the arrogant, insolent, lawless taxi drivers...... every mm of the road to and from work or wherever;

3. We berate the high crime rate and reluctance of police to apprehend suspects.

Now, here we have them attempting to arrest (never mind the reason), we note the initial reaction of the suspect of scuffling with police.

We also observe a policeman telling him to get inside the van after he has been cuffed.

He didn't die on the scene (after the 'drag racing'!); that is a different issue.

So now, where do we go from here?

Catch a suspect and politely ask him to follow you to the police cells?

I repeat, am not condoning the brutality..... just throwing some variables / questions!

Im with Umlilo here...there is not enough done to help our police to cope with the stress caused by the violence that they have to deal with day in and day out, the fact that these guys snapped was inevitable ............I for one would not want to do the job for 1 week never mind making a career out of it..As Umlilo says we cannot condone the violence but this breaking point has been a long time coming.
Give everything but up!

Come on guys,
They could have put he's arms behind he's back and handcuffed him,then shackled he's legs and put him in the van.
No need to drag him along a Tarmac road.
There is a right and a wrong way to deal with criminals and low life's and I'm afraid that was the wrong way.

Taze the suspect??? Use the Baton (one quick shot on the legs), as Dave mentioned shackle his legs (take out his trunks and he is not so feisty anymore) most he could do is "Wiggle" surely a cop or two could handle a little wiggle...but to try and make the guy pull a blade runner down the track is not the way!!!

Like Tich,Umlilo and many others I also do NOT condone violence esp. from our Police Force,
but I do not agree about "this breaking point"
I am sure that at least one or even two of those policemen have comitted violent acts previously
This was just one that was caught on camera
Here in the Western Cape it happens every other weekend.
Now while I feel nothing for DRUG DEALERS, RAPISTS and MURDERERS, I hate the way they [police] go about their work
Too often the wrong people get hurt, INNOCENT bystanders,granny's & kids they have no regard for
Don't get me wrong,I do believe we need them,and know some who is PASSIONATE about their work!

Of course no one can condone dragging a human being behind a vehicle - but something needs to be done to address the absolute disregard many (if not most) of these taxi drivers have for the law - they stop where they want, they pass on the shoulder of the road (after all it's only them that needs to be somehere NOW), and they throw you a sign if you do not want to let them in after passing you on the shoulder - they act like it is their right to drive any way they want - probably their behavior is also a result of apartheid - like any unlawful act committed by the 'masses' ?

i dont know the official stats but its something along these lines.

a policeman in sa when leaving home in the morning for the start of his/her shift has 60% chance of being shot at that day and a 15% chance of dying on the job..........they need support not criticism

BLAST FROM THE PAST..

There was outrage when 3 white cops set the dogs on a illegal Mozambican immigrant a few years ago, who later died of his wounds.

Just giving facts, just giving facts...
