BLACK Caviar waited almost five years, but she finally took her revenge. The horse known to her connections as "Nelly" stood on the foot of her co-owner Jill Taylor on the weekend, ripping out a nail.
It was payback, you might argue, for Jill Taylor's reluctance to buy Black Caviar when her husband David first floated the idea of buying a horse back in 2008.
The Melbourne couple had never bought a horse, and Jill was none too impressed when her husband decided to join a syndicate of friends and purchase a one sixth share of the great mare.
Black Caviar cost $210,000. That means the Taylors were up for $35,000, and there was no way Jill Taylor was parting with that kind of money without a fight.
"I'd never really had anything to do with horses," Jill tells news.com.au. "Back then we had twin girls in primary school and owning a racehorse didn't seem to fit into our busy lifestyle.
"My husband kept telling me to transfer the money but I kept hanging up on him. I knew he was serious and it's not like I was angry or anything. I just refused to pay for it."
Jill's husband David Taylor was then a real estate agent who today runs a company called Kristalbond which produces insulating window coating. He remembers well the frantic call from one of the other owners urging him to pay up for his share of the horse.
"I actually thought she had transferred the money, but a couple of weeks later, I got a call from one of my partners who said ‘you haven't paid the money across'," David recalls.
"Eventually I just walked around to the bank and did it myself. I am a dinosaur who doesn't do electronic banking."
Those few blocks David Taylor walked through downtown Melbourne have since netted him and his wife at least a million dollars. That's a one-sixth share of Black Caviar's total of $7,348,396 in prize money – minus the $4,000 monthly training fees.
The question is: would their marriage have survived if Jill had gotten her way and stopped her husband from pursuing his mad scheme?
"I'll tell you something. He would have been able to deal with it," Jill says. "I tell you who wouldn't have been able to cope and that's me. I would not have coped because I would be watching this beautiful amazing horse that became a household name and thinking ‘how could I be so silly?'"
Jill Taylor elected to miss Black Caviar's first run in April 2009, instead attending a child's party. When someone told her the horse had won its first start, she barely raised an eyebrow.
By the following Monday morning, all that had changed. As Jill says, she was proudly telling anyone who wanted to know, and probably plenty who didn't, that "our" horse had won.
Today, she is Nelly's greatest admirer, and will be trackside at Randwick on Saturday as she guns for her 25th consecutive win at her 25th start.
"Money cannot buy the experience that we have had, it is a fairytale, a dream.
"There are are other horses that have done some brilliant things, but people just love this horse and not just for her unbeaten record," she says with the pride of a doting mother.
"That huge stride which is 1.3 times the average, and that heart that she showed over at Ascot when she was injured and ran through the pain. That's why the nation is behind her."
The Taylors have four horses now with various trainers both here and overseas. Naturally, they've now experienced that losing feeling. As for Black Caviar, well, losing is something Jill Taylor just won't contemplate.
"I have never thought of the possibility of her losing even though we are all staring at it on the day every time she races."
"I am just concerned that she pulls up all right. But if she does lose one day, I still think she's done what she has to do. I would still be very disappointed and we would like to retire her unbeaten, of course we would love that."

Speaking to Lips >> RE ipi Tombe- I think it was Zim $10k. Heaven only knows how much that was at the time, but it was before the era of mega inflation in Zim.

If I remember correctly Ipi Tombe cost the equivalent of R1500. Somewhere in the region of USD 200.

Jet Master was bought as a weanling at a PMB sale, at the showgrounds. He was being sold by breeder Hugh Jonsson (recently deceased), who needed a quick cash injection at the time.
It was the first time the horse had been separated from his mother and Pat Devine heard him squealing in the stables when she was doing a solo tour of inspection. The Devines had come to purchase some Oppenheimer mares which were being culled and Henry Devine had no intention of buying a horse to race. His wife had by then fallen in love with the colt, even though he was very ungainly at the time, and she made him promise her that they would buy Jet Master if he went for no more than R12 000.
When the bidding went higher, she pleaded with him to raise his bid, but he refused, saying that they had better colts on their own stud. At a crucial moment, when the bids had reached just under R15 000, she knocked his elbow in the air and the horse was sold to them. he didn't speak to her for a week, but her perspicacity earned them a fortune and gave them the ride of their lives.
