Umlilo to suggest BB/AA appointees are incompetent is very low of you man, especially coming from the person you claim to be.
you know very well that if wasn't for BEE/AA a lot talented and intelligent people would still be unemployed in this country!!

Ken, I think Umlilo is quoting the corrupt ones which do exist and I also think that he agrees with you on the overall picture or intention of BBBEE. You cannot deny that the application and/or policing of BBBEE has been largely suspect from day one. At same time, Umlilo wont deny that many success stories for previously disadvantaged South Africans do exist.
I think that what gets to Umlilo is the alarmingly high rate of corruption that has emerged as BBBEE has been implemented in comparison to the low individual success stories, for all South Africans.
To me, part of Umlilo's frustration is the fact that his people, an ancient people who were borne of this land and who actively engaged in the fight for freedom are now forgotten and overridden. I would feel exactly the same as he does !

Although in agreement unfortunately there are still many unemployed people that are talented and intelligent out there, and their numbers are GROWING.

@keniza999:
'...especially coming from the person you claim to be.'
Either you misread me or tongue in cheek? On the other, if I touched a raw nerve....that's the truth!
Whatever, I don't claim to be anyone; my track record speaks for itself.
My taxes are uptodate, I worked myself up (without the 'favour' of tenders or multimillion Rand loan from DTI for a business!), I employ blacks (happy!), I owe nobody any money, and I am more South African than many blacks who have benefitted inexorably than not only Indians, Coloureds and whites, but also fellow Africans! BEE/AA is assumed to benefit all blacks, but, who made the remarkable observation that Coloureds are 'over-represented in the Western Cape'?
So, can I say that Indians and Coloureds are under-represented within the horseracing industry?
Strange that during those days, as a school kid, I wrote 'Hang Vorster! Free Mandela!' graffiti on a swimming pool wall; in protest against a regime I did not agree with.......
Today, Westville Boys High kids depict graffiti on t-shirts about the current regime, and they are nailed!

From my side in 1992 i had just lost my wife to breast cancer but having being involved in racing since the early 1970's i was shocked to here that the new govt either provincial or national proposed that racing should be controlled by an independent body.My concern was that who was going to pay for it and how effective it would be.At that stage every person who held a licence such as breeders,jockeys etc had to licence themselves and abide by the rules,but when the govt made a rule that gambling debts were legally enforceable,the then Jockey Club would not enforce the warning off of defaulters and that was when the bookmakers and other creditors lost faith in the NHRA.You cannot have a situation where certain role players are treated more favourably that others,that leads to contempt.I would like to know if you Umlilo could tell us who was to fund the jockey club.Once again the taxes generated are being used for commercial enterprise instead of for the benefit of the poor.

@whitehouse:
'1992 i had just lost my wife to breast cancer '
I can empathise with you mate; I also lost my wife (1987) in a car accident. Only those of us who underwent such loss at an early stage of our lives know what it is and how it impacts on us....God bless both their souls!
'who was to fund the jockey club'
Due to time constraints, when we were in the US to overview the gambling jurisdictions, I wanted to pursue the Horseracing Boards they had in place in some states (eg Delaware). However, my fellow members (virtually none of them knew anything about horseracing) were more interested in the casino and bingo operations.
Also, during discussions at the Asian Racing Cnference at Sun City, I had chats with various delegates, including a retired, respected army general from Australia. He was of the firm opinion that corporatisation will kill the industry and we agreed that the route was for the industry to continue as it was (Section 21), open its doors to membership to all role players across the board (introduce blacks into the game by incentives, grants, etc....a introduce them via a learning curve).
An X amount would be set aside each year from turnover/profits to sponsor what we would now call 'transformation'.
The Jockey Club (together with the farrier's school and Ondestepoort) be set up completely independent of the operation and they be funded by Government (Province) by the then existing and applicable HRDF (Horseracing Development Fund which had accrued over R40-million at the time of corporatisation).
My suggestions were taken with a pinch of salt by the Gambling Board; don't blame them as they had no idea of the industry or interest, as the big fish was the casino licence! In fact, a video which caught a leading owner making derogatory remarks about the Gambling Bard members (calling them idiots with Jabu), was subsequently deleted.
As for the majority of the industry's role players, they were more concerned about having blacks as owners and trainers, with some remarking 'Give them a horse, they will eat the bloody thing!'
The fact that I was offered a massive bribe to support a certain bid is an indication of what was probably involved.

bottom line...be it greedy politicians....or greedy administrators....they are not interested in the well being of the industry....but rather the raping of the profits.....
